That's what the P, Dr Hon, said this morning at the Parent's Symposium. It just started this year.

        Can elaborate ?
        What symposium was that ?

It's the HCI DSA Parent's Symposium for those with CO/WL. Even though it's a presentation (by the JC1/2 students) cum Q & A sessions, it's more like a parenting workshop. One of the parents invited for the dialogue session was Mdm Heng, the P of NYGH.
There are 450 vacancies for HCI Sec 1 in 2012. Among these, 225 were given CO and 140 on WL. For the first 50% on the WL, if they put HCI as first choice, they'll be guaranteed a place in HCI. Dr Hon told the parents that since HCI is an independent school, the P has the autonomy to decide for 40 places.

Very high numbers for CO and WL here.

Assuming if everyone on CO selects HCI and 50% of WL, the intake via DSA is 295 out of 450 places = 65%. That's a high number of places taken up at DSA stage.

Unless most of these successful candidates are non GEP. Or else we know where they will most like choose to go to.

if that is true then some schools would probably be more generous in granting CO / WL for the DSA candidates, as competition for top students will hot up as more IP schools are coming on stream

Does he referred to HCI only or all across the board?..

I know a few last year were on WL and preferred to opt for CO even from second choice school - a WL is a WL without assurance

Mdm Heng was there as P of NYGH or was she there because he DS is entering / already in HCI ?

In a previous DSA briefing I attended, the P of the IP mentioned that MOE only allows up to 50% of IP vacancies to be offered as CO. The P mentioned that their wish is also to offer more COs but can't do so due to MOE rule :frustrated: To me, the promise to those with WLs that they will become confirmed seats if the kids put the school as first choice is such a good deal :imcool: And it's such a clever strategy on the part of the schools. Win-win :grphug: Don't remember past years have such promise. But on the other hand, my personal observation is - based on historical trend, quite a number of kids must have rejected COs of the schools which can make such promise. Haha my own view only pls don't flame me 😓 :pokeeye: Btw the R family schools did not make such similar promise right

actually as independent schools with IP, they have 100% discretion is admission decision, not 50%. eg NUSH admission is 100% on DSA, they don't take part in S1 posting

How much discretion will the Sec Schools have for 2011 DSA-Sec Exercise?

                        Type of School \tDiscretionary Places

Schools with Integrated Programme (IP) or Specialised Independent Schools (viz. NUSHS, SOTA, SST) \tUp to 100%

                        Independent Schools (without IP) \t20%
                        Autonomous Schools (without IP) \t10%
                        Niche Programme Schools \t5%

Last year, all the IP schools admitted up to only 50% of the Secondary One places through the DSA-Sec Exercise. This year, we expect a similar proportion of places to be available for the centralised posting. NUSHS, SST and SOTA do not participate in the centralised posting.
