DSA 2011

For performing arts, DSA decision depends on the schools. What the schools list as their minimum requirements may not be the criteria they privately use to decide who to give offers to.
P4 is fine, although it depends on which sport/aesthetic you're looking at. For DSA they're more interested in the achievements you have attained in the sport/aesthetic. So if you're a national athelete, swimmer, gymnast with impressive medals you can try. Similarly if you start late in certain aesthetics but are able to attain the minimum criteria, you're fine.
Some are alright with a good standard eg. for chinese orchestra advanced grades like grades 7-9 or diploma and good CCA records (eg. NYGH & RVHS quite easily accepts students with these types of portfolio). However, some other schools would require to see commendable leadership (eg. section leader or concertmaster-the main leader of whole orchestra, in that CCA), plus outstanding performance eg. not only from instrumental grading, but from competition awards. -

between yang qin and guzhen - i heard guzhen easier to play while yang qin more difficult to manage bec too many strings to handle, is it true ?
If your child is interested in Chinese Orchestra, the teachers-in-charge or instructors-in-charge, would generally let them try out several instruments to see which they have the aptitude for. Sometimes the instructors look at their size, the hand-shape, hand-size also to recommend. Unless, the child already plays a particular instrument lah, like my ds2 when he first joined Chinese orch. -

Not seriously intending to use CCA as DSA, but I am wondering if popular CCAs such as bands or orchestras will accept students at P4. This is one concern I have when considering if we should return earlier than planned. I have the impression that one must join these CCAs from P3 or even earlier... -

Plus whatever parameters/criteria they use to exclude students.....scm292:
HAST results could be used to select the 200+ for second round activity and interview.
Sounds like the HAST is mainly used to shortlist for 2nd round only then. After that, the observation/comments from teachers & student leaders through the day-camp -- the discussions/group activities and interview are added in to further shortlist for DSA offers. -
chamonix:
Should be ok lah. But your boy wants to join String Orchestra/Ensemble? Or he wants Band/Chinese Orchestra(CO)? Bc for Band/CO, he'd need to spend some time learning the instrument of his choice - although most school groups will have instructors providing training during CCA time.

Hi phankao,
Yes, he would very much prefer String Ensemble. He enjoyed palying in the Ensemble here. But there aren’t many schools having String Ensemble, right? CHS and NYPS are the only ones I know that have String Ensemble. Do you know of any around Upper Bt Timah and Bt Batok? -

Maybe you can take a look at this list from last year's Primary school SYF. It may not show ALL the schools having string groups, but it at least shows the schools that have sent String Groups to participate in the Festival.Hi phankao,

For all other Performing Arts groups and other year results, do check SYF website:

Hope that helps. -
i believe it is more inclusion criteria, rather than exclusion criteria.

I agree. I hope that i won't have stones thrown at me for saying this....
I think NJC maybe looking for team players rather than individual performers. Just a hunch after talking to DS2 about what they did and talked about. Just a hunch.....that's all. -
from DS’s interview at NJC, they were looking for independent thinkers and also ability to stand up for what one believes in, despite contrarian views from the others.
