Just for your info, if you DSA by Chinese Orchestra into Duman High, they will ask you to learn from their teachers, it is a basic requirement. And their CO is so huge, only GOOD SENIORS are allowed on stage, all lower-secs are not, no matter how much better you are. So please think consider carefully:) P.S. There might be one or two exceptions.
On stage for SYF or concerts ?
On stage for concerts, if u are good, u will still participate....
For SYF, precisley the CO is so huge, seniors are chosen....
Just wondering, is this common practise? Unless the child is well known in sports or arts or academic competitions, how will secondary schools knows of the child?

Anyway, :congrats: your son has obviously put in lots of hard work .

I don't know whether it is common practice or not but I heard some girls schools will have some students invited to have tea with principal of some top girls school? I think I read somewhere in KSP.

I think such practice is getting more common nowadays....letters/ Cards of invitation to DSA to Top Sec Schs.....

Yes, i had posted that info in KSP b4 .....
Few yrs ago, my gal already received such letter/ Card of invitation...
What i was told was that....
The P of the Top Sch (for my gal's case is RGS) wrote in to some primary schs ( esp all girls' pri schs)
To request fr the sch, the names and particulars of their Top few students in the level ( based on sch results)
And the invitation letters/cards \"Tea with the Principal\" would be forwarded to the respective student....

Marketing strategy ?? πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜‚
very common, top pupils are always receiving invitation to RGS or NYG....that was years ago for my DD...

But if this is a child who entered via DSA for CO, wouldn't that child be already of a high-enough standard required by the school for them to put him/her on a higher placing? So certainly would be in for SYF & concerts, I'd think.

We are not talking about those who did not enter via DSA and may not be of an already higher standard.

Perhaps they need to be better trained by their teachers and equip with more experiences in stage performance,
that may explain why the seniors are chosen for SYF....

Well, since my gal isnt fr CO, probably someone who has DSAed via CO,
and who currently is a junior, would be a better person to give details....

So I think they would have some standard lah. I think from my observations, it is just that they may not be sitting at the 1st/2nd rows nor hold leadership positions. Leadership positions are for the seniors - at least Sec 3 or 4. And I doubt they would allow a Sec 1 or 2 to be concertmaster/concertmistress (at 1st chair) or section leaders even if they are national champions if they are juniors. ;D That is totally understandable in the heirachy of school COs.

So what I'm highlighting is that ... the concern of being \"left out\" if offered by DHS under DSA CO - that concern is likely not one to worry about.

Hi,

For RGS it’s important to be invited to the Tea with P as they call it. Every year they usually have approx 40 or so slots for sports DSA and similar for academic. There will be one T with P for academic and another for Sports.

For the Sports one, it usually means your DD has been pre screened. Given the high standards of RGS sports teams, if you are invited it means your DD will probably be in the top 3 or so in her sports field from a national basis.

Cheers

My gal dsa last yr into one of the top sch. Her PSLE score is about 20 marks off the cut off point. So far she is coping well with both her study and cca. Her tests so far are within the average score. However, there are some classmates who look down on dsa student and refuse to be in the group with them in case they drag down their score. After you get into your dream school, things may not be happily ever after. I did not factor in her emotional problem when I dsa last year. A decision which I regretted.

This is true in the long term when kids starting to know who is who via dsa sports, academics, MEP, GEP, high scorer. Just as a matter of time.
Study hard lor.

For my DD school, the sports DSA girls are evenly distributed among all the non GEP classes. They are treated as equals in class and most of them are coping very well as DD school encourages project team work where everyone needs to pull their weight and help out each other.

She is very happy in her class and certainly do not feel any inferiority complex. In fact given the standard of some of the sports girls in her school, some of their top sports girls are put on a pedestal and regarded as role models!
