Just to share my two cents worth.
My Burmese maid has been with me for 3 and half years. with no experience and limited English. We basically communicated with her using sign language and labelling our stuff. She picked up rather fast and now she can speak better. Personal hygiene is fine with me. But ever since having long hair, she starts to take a very long 30 min shower. She does do an "ok" job with cleaning. But when comes to fragile or valuable objects, I would recommend that they do not handle. Mine broke a few table top glass and utensils. Feedback from my friend who had one too, hers cracked her granite table top and floor tiles.
Maybe after working long here, they will change and start to take things for granted.
She thinks herself as part of our family and feels like she is an equal. She will pull a long face when we tell her that we want things done our way, not hers. Not only that, she starts show disrespect to us. e.g. when she doesn’t get her off day or we don’t bring her out, she will sulk or give us a black face.
We try to give in as we understand that she loves our kids. But her behaviour is sometimes really out of hand. -
dear all, i can totally understand what you have been gg through
i had 4 Burmese helpers too
1st didn’t complete her contract cos "grandma had cancer and wanted to see her fave granddaughter marry before she died" how true was that i don’t know. But yes they are extremely stubborn, unable to take criticism and can suddenly give you a heart attack by announcing out of the that they are unhappy or "family problem" and need to return home at the urging of their family even if that means to buy their own air ticket. Burmese are very very proud people.
2nd one was a single mom with 2 kids n had a boyfriend who she claimed is her brother n therefore need to call him every night to talk. she loved to carry my baby son, stand in front of the mirror to dance.
3rd only stayed a week cos she did nothing except to sit in the middle of the kitchen floor, beat her chest and wail cos she was homesick. she also grumbled non stop.
my 4th insist only on drinking certain things like Nescafe 3 in 1, Milo with Anlene milk She insists that she can’t take sweet stuff but takes liberal helpings of my husband’s jam, she helps herself to my mother’s anlene gold, eats more rice at every meal than my husband. yells and shouts at me and my mum and dictates her terms of what she will and will not do.she asked for various things from my relatives but now that her luggage is bursting she says she doesn’t want them anymore. best part is when she does not understand your instructions she picks a fight with you based on her misunderstanding.
after 6 yrs i think i had it with burmese helpers. its just too time consuming to explain n when they are finally a little better they start their nonsense n pack their bags.
btw, this 4th one recently lamented that she has put on 10kg… sigh…
she is a nightmare n we can’t wait for her to go… -

Thanks for your reply.
Previously only tried Indo, thinking to try burmese now. Any comments to share? :? Thanks in advance. -
Im into my 3rd burmese. This time I took one frm Chin state and is a Christian. Communication is a big problem but lucky this girl is clean and neat and do take instructions (provided she understands) one month today and shes only good at housework, washing and ironing. Cant cook at all, cant make maggie mee or beat an egg, no basic in cooking… When asked to peel the skin of a cucumber, she peeled the whole cucumber, uses newspaper to wash the body of my car… I always tell her to ask if shes in doubt but realize she cant ask when she think that what shes doing is right in burma but not in spore.
Shes all out to make $$ so willing to learn but real frustrating when communication breaks down… no point wasting time explaining just got to give specific instructions and demonstrate how u want things done.
They are nt really trained in Yangon, just some short briefing. A lot of them fail their english when they get here so the agents make them memorise the questions and answers and leave it to us to train from scratch. Its ok if u have the patience and time but common sense seem to be lacking in them.
