Unfortunately it will take a long time to train a green horn Burmese maid. It took 1 year to train my previous Burmese maid who was a U grad. Problem is they don't do housework at home.

Tell your brother maid don't just learn English but help around the house and learn cooking from their sister and mother before they come.

Don't frighten me. I read from an earlier post here about a Myanmar maid who cannot wash dishes even after some time, and also cannot open a can :nailbite: I have had my share of training maids and enduring their nonsense...so your 'take long time to train a green horn' reminds me of labour pain and engorgement. I pity my mum who has to face her.

Some of them are just pretending. Mine cannot understand what \"water\" is but can tell me \"dangerous\" when she has to stand on a chair to clean the surface of wardrobes. Can eat but cannot work.

You can try 2nd floor Peninsula Plaza, next to Bata. The shop is around there, think called UES. But it is expensive. I was quoted $20. Luckily my agent issue a copy to their maids. The cover looks like the Oxford dictionary.

You may wish to check with your agent if they have any such dictionary to sell to you. Alternatively, you can ask your maid how to say some of the key words (wash, dry, iron, scrub, soap, etc depending on your job scope needs) in Myanmese. I find it more efficient as we probably learn faster than them.

Anyone has any recent experience in the renewal of a Myanmar passport? An account of process and cost would be appreciated, including % of tax payable. Thanks. The website at the Myanmar Embassy only provides info on docs to bring : http://www.mesingapore.org.sg/consular.html#case1

Hi, would like to ask if anyone ever brought their Burmese helper overseas to Hong Kong and Australia (less than 1 month per destination)? I wonder how long does the VISA cost and how long in advance do I need to apply VISA for her.

We have not tried before but understand it is a very long, costly process if do in Singapore. We have seen their embassy very packed with myanmar ppl daily and the waiting time is long. Advise given then was to send maid back to their country and renew.

Alternatively, you can ask the maid agent for advise.....

My ex-maid renewed her passport while she worked for us. She needed to go to Myanmar embassy personally, filled up a form and submitted application, paying about $800 and got back new passport in two weeks. Depending how long she has worked in Singapore, normally, the charge is 10% of their total earning.
