Hi all, my DS is determined to take designing courses in Poly. Now for him hes pretty much decided on oth subj choosing but hes stil unsure on choosing Geo+SS or His+SS. Both subjects he has not much interest in…hes clear that he does not want Pure humanities. Asking for some suggestions or thoughts from parents here.
TIA! -

Just pick the lesser of the 2 evils, i.e. pick the one that he thinks can do better than the other. Just to have a grind out a result for the next 2 years and he don't have to see either geo or his ever again.

Hi leekien,
My DD who’s in S4 says His+SS questions have similar answering techniques.
Hope this helps -

Triple Science is still allowed, only up to Year (3 & 4). But not allowed, beyond Year 4
Triple Science? Is it still allowed nowadays?lee_yl:
Yes Chem is compulsory
chem biology
Or chem physics
Or triple sci
No Bio phy combi -
But, once enter Junior College level (JC1 or Year 5), for Science students -
Not allowed to take Triple Science anymore, because SEAB (Sg) made us take a compulsory contrasting subject, from Arts / Humanities category. At JC1, Science students either take
- PCM (Physics, Chem, Maths), or
- BCM (Bio, Chem, Maths), plus a 4th subject from Arts side. Choosing this 4th contrasting subject, not easy
Retrieving an old post.
Last week DD1 was telling me that her teacher spoke to them about subject combo for Sec 3 next year. I am inclined for her to go for triple Science after reading Slmkhoo’s post about the benefits of doing triple Science. However, my daughter has her own reservations. Girl was told if she does not hit overall 65% (in yr 3 / yr 4), she would not be allowed to take H2 level for Science in Year6.
So far, DD1’s scores are
Chemistry - A1
Physics - A1
Biology - B4
Another dilemma is, which 2 sciences to take. Girl’s favourite Science subject is Biology but she can’t score. She really hates Physics but got A1. How? -
Yes, this was a dilemma for my DD too, but in her case, she wanted A Maths but couldn’t score. However, after appealing, her sch allowed her to take it. She is now in S4 and just found out she failed the subject in her prelim.
I think it’s best to go with which subjects score the highest. We may enjoy one subject but doesn’t mean we can get top marks for it. And for O levels, the smaller the final aggregate, the more options you have for further study.
Alternatively, B4 is not high but it’s not low either. Maybe get intensive 1 to 1 tuition during the year-end hol and hope that helps? -
Take it from a person who has failed A Math for S4 prelim (F9 - total score less than 20 / 196
probably should have framed up the exam papers).
Wasn't allowed to take Math C for the first 3 months in JC but (ownself) refused to attend AO Math lectures and tutorials. Nevertheless, ended up with double math combination in JC after O Level result. After scoring very well for A Level, the prelim score is truly forgotten :rotflmao:
Don't be distracted by short-term result - S1 / S2 is probably just a walk in the park and may have unrealistic high score (if the school is in a charitable mood). If the girl's interest in biology, there will be more willingness to improve and study in the long term, i.e. there's more potential of an upside from current result of B4. If she is already hating physics now (despite scoring A1), can't imagine what will happen when shit hits the roof. Newton had already found out, when the object is not in motion, or refuse to move, the amount of energy required is much greater to get it moving (or something like that). -

or Chem Bio
no interest is a torture to study that subject - going to get difficult in higher level.
65% is equi to B3 for O level - i think thats requirements for JC in Sci faculty - but some can appeal
edit to add: I think the SA2 papers will be much more difficult as this is the main results to use for subject com requirements - can still wait see look ( smell flower & clouds :rotflmao:

What about also taking into consideration the interest between the 2nd humanities subject and Physics?

Combi 1 - triple Sc + first Humanities subject (is it E Lit?)
Combi 2 - Combi 1 minus Physics add 2nd Humanities subject
Whether the interest in 2nd Humanities subject < interest in Physics.
