      Mark spent 2/3 of his money on 3 cups and 3 plates and 1/4 of the remaining money on 2 napkins. Each cup costs 1/7 as much as each plate. Each napkin costs $7 more than each cup. How much money did Mark spend on each plate?

      Hi all,
      any suggestion how to solve this question? Help greatly appreciated.

      Hi

      3C + 3P = 2/3 = 24/36 of money
      1P = 7C, 24C = 24/36 of money,
      1C = 1/36 of money
      1P = 7/36 of money
      1N = 1/36 of money + $7 = 1/2 x 1/4 x 1/3 of money = 1/24 of money
      so (1/24 - 1/36) of money = $7
      1/72 of money = $7, 1/36 of money = $14

      1N = 1/36 of money + $7 = $ 14 + $ 7 = $21

      cheers.

            Hi MathIzzzFun,

            Thanks for the solution. Can you explain the following part of the working

            1N = 1/36 of money + $7 = 1/2 x 1/4 x 1/3 of money = 1/24 of money

            How do we get 1/2x1/4x1/3?

            Thanks!

              thank you for your help. there is another speed question.

              Mr Tan drove from city X to city Y.At the same time,Mr Koh drove from city Y to city X.They passed each other 64 km away from city Y and continued their journeys. They made a u-turn upon reaching their destinations so that they could return to their own cities. They passed each other again 52 km away from city X.Find the distance between the two places when they met each other.

              Hi

              Can you explain why they meet at 52km away from city x, should the total distance be 3XY and not 2XY as in ur working. Thank You :salute:

                Hi,
                Am I right to say 2XY is the total distance they travelled after they met at A ? BTW, why is distance travelled by Mr Koh from A to B = 2x64 ??

                Thx

                  Hi, mathsguru I don’t understand why it is 64 2 -522=24 is the answer for the speed question.

                    my kid came back with the working for the first speed question which I have asked earlier , i don’t understand can you please explain?

                    60 mins ----20 km
                    10 mins ---- 20km÷ 60 = 3 1/3
                    40 km ÷3 1/3 =12
                    12× 10 min= 120 min
                    120min ÷2 =60
                    60 +20 =80
                    Can you explain the logic on this working? thank you

                      Hi

                      Mark spent 1/4 of the remaining money on 2 napkins

                      remaining money = 1/3 of money
                      so 2 napkins = 1/4 x 1/3 of money
                      1 napkin = 1/2 x 1/4 x 1/3 of money

                      cheers.

                        When they first meet at A, the total distance travelled is XY (refer to the two straight green and blue arrows)

                        After they meet, Mr Tan travelled from A - Y - B, and Mr Koh travelled from A-X-B and the total distance ie A-Y-B + A-X-B, is 2XY.

                        cheers.
