2010 PSLE Discussion
-
My child’s not taking PSLE yet but I have quite a few students taking PSLE next year. We’ve started to prepare for PSLE 2010.
It’s regular consistent work that is going to help them. Especially for those who do not have a strong foundation, they need to work extra hard now to play catch up before they move on to P6 syllabus. -

Will you quit your job, or take no pay leave to help prepare for PSLE? Is it common ?
I didn't when my son was doing his PSLE last year. I don't know if I will do for my daughter next year. If I get retrenched, probably a good excuse to stay home till her PSLE is over.
But I know some of my friends do take long leave or no pay leave to coach their children, if company or boss is understanding. -

ApronMama,
Hi Lizawa,
My child falls on the same batch too and I have the same concern. So far I tried Victoria and EPH for their new format but I am still unsure of the kind of standard if they meet the actual PSLE since there is nothing to benchmark like you say.
What about enrichment centre? Which enrichment centre are you currently enaging and will be using for P6 preparation? how do you find their material?
Having gone through the P5 with the new format, do you find both of them easier or more difficult than the old one? And which assessment book have you been using?
What about Maths, do you find the introduction of calculator make the last 13 questions more difficult than yr 2008?
While 2009 PSLE is just over, could you share your plan for yout P6 preparation? When do you normally start?
I will start this Dec holiday. I think 10 months will pass very quickly in the new year.
For Chinese, the teacher is saying last year's batch (Y2008) got the easiest format. Our children's batch compre will require more thinking. Especially for HMT, cannot lift from passage.
I use EPH assessment books also. but like you, I don't know if they are up to standard.
For Maths, I believe there are many factors. Who knows, maybe this year's PSLE Maths results will be the best among all other years.
But I seriously don't like the separation into 2 papers. Too distracting and sometimes give wrong impression or expectation that Paper 2 will be as easy as Paper 1. -
In fact, I will start next week, since her exams will be finished by today. Will start her off with past years Eng papers first. Thereafter weekends will coach her on maths. I've actually trying to target to complete the mid year topics by dec. By Feb, will start her on 2009 CA1 papers from those top schs.. time is tight for Pr 6... so have to be kiasu...

Is P4 CL included? Is the old list(2008) of cheng yu still valid? How will you begin your preparation by teaching P6 topics, or revise P4 & 5? New CL text book is always unvailable for this batch during year end vacation.ApronMama,

Hi Anxious Mom
To complete the mid year topics by dec. Are you refering to P5 topics? See that really make me kanchang.
But if I start the revision now with my son… My hubby will probably think that I am super KS.
Worst of all is I very kanchang, but my hubby is very relax… he watches TV went he knock off from work and my kids get ‘attracted’ to the TV.

Hello
Can I know what type of books to buy in order to kick start revision to prepare for PSLE? Is there a 10 years series book for English, Science and Math?
How do I go about balancing current curriculum and preparing for PSLE at the same time? -
Herbie:
Sorry, didnt make myself clear. I intend to start her off with her Pr 6 Maths during weekends so that weekdays she can start to do her assessment books while iI'm at work. Also, I will be getting the Sci Ass Book from Popular where she can start to do her revision for pr 3-5 during the dec holidays. cos i believe when sch reopens, they dont have much time to do our homework. Since Pri 1, I have been giving my dau daily homework for 3 subjects during sch holidays. So left with Chi where there is nothing much we can do.Hi Anxious Mom

I think it’s good we share some of our plans. Then we can learn from one another and see what works for our child.
For me, my plan is to let her relax for another 1 or 2 weeks, her last paper was just yesterday. Then we will start to
1. work on the weakest subject first by revising concepts or work on strategies to help pull up the grade for her weaker subjects.
2. complete the P5 assessment books which she has not completed. I bought 1 book on 100 Cloze and 1 book on 100 Vocab which were half complete only.
3. complete the P5 past year papers (left a few Science)
I will just start her with P6 assessment books for all subjects (except Science) around December. After that go for 1.5 weeks holiday in mid December. Come back, must get back to study momentum again, before school reopens. -

Don't think there is 10 year series. But I do know the school will make them buy past year PSLE papers (by MOE) for revision.
