every school's raw score is of no help in the estimate because their standards are different from school to school. A child from school A with raw score of 380 cannot be compared with another child of the same raw score from school B.
I am using PSLE score here to estimate - not raw score from schools.
And nobody actually know the raw scores in the actual PSLE exam, but it is a known fact that every subject's mean and SD are different
I am making informed guesses of the PSLE total raw-scores from the extreme cases. The estimate is for overall mean and SD. Since the papers are easy, the SD should be quite consistent for all 4 papers.
it will be more instructive if the schools provide its own t-score for every student every year and bench mark it to actual performance at PSLE and see where they stand. that will be much more able to predict the PSLE actual scores
I know a NYP girl who failed her P6 math in every semester but got an A in PSLE, which explains why the mean for NYP math is ONLY 65.8. She was so demoralised and her parents were so upset. I really cannot understand how such mis-match between prelim and psle standard is of help. So the parents will tell the kid, \"Don't worry, it is ok to fail now. Based on the bench mark to actual performace at PSLE, you will get A\"

Therefore, knowing that the overall mean is around 69 and yet that school's mean for math is 65.8, we can tell the school that they are doing a disservice to the weaker students. Losing confidence and developing dislike for math is not something that can be corrected easily.

hi, Mum-to-2, understand your difficult position…

M good friend’s son also get 203, hard to make choices…
Need comments on following schools:
-Serangoon Garden Sec (nearest, can walk to school), but not sure whether good environment, how’s students’ general behaviour+teachers?
-Hougang Sec COP 208,
-Guang Yang COP 203
-Deyi COP 214(think no chance at all right?)
-Yio CHu Kang COP 188
-Chong Boon COP 190,
-Pierce Sec COP 208…
Any comments on the above schools, esp Serangoon Garden Sec,Pierce, Chong Boon, Guang Yang?? need a school with motivating environment, coz this boy is easily influence+distracted…
They stay Serangoon North…Thanks in advance!!

atutor2001:

My analysis to estimate the average and stardard deviation based on feedback we got here :

T-score 282 (assuming that the raw score is 99 for every subject)
T-score 263 with 4A* (assuming that the raw score is 91 for every subject)

Based on the above assumptions, the \"average\" mean per subject is about 64 and the \"average\" standard deviation i.e. spread is about 17 marks.

Very surprised that the sd (spread) is so big.

There is another case where 3A* & 1A gets 249. Based on my above estimates for mean and SD, the T-score will be about 254. Therefore, the above estimates are quite off.

I have adjusted the assumption for the average raw score from 91 to 92 for the T-score of 263. That gives the following new estimates of the mean and SD :

Mean is about 68.8
Sd is about 14.7

With this mean and SD, the 3A* & 1A will be about 249.5.
Therefore, I think for future estimation of T-score, we can use

Mean = 69 and SD = 15

hi,

my son has 1a* 3a, his score is 228. he is very disappointed. wonder should go for appeal. need yr advice pls. thank you.

Hi

The worst possible Total Raw Score for 1A*+3A = 91 + 3x75 = 316
The worst possible Average Raw Score = 316/4 = 79 (per subject)

T-score per subject = 50 + 10(79 - 69)/15 (Based on estimated mean = 69 & SD = 15)
T-score per subject = 56.66...
Total Aggregate T-score for 4 subjects = 56.66... x 4 = 226.66...
(which is lower than your son's T-score of 228)

Therefore, based on the estimates, it should be possible for 1A* + 3A to get 228.

tq so much atutor2001.

as he had fever during psle, with special consideration of 4 points, he has 232. goin to appeal for sst as our ds didnt manage to clear e 2nd around. now, we are struggling as to which schools to choose. seems like to risky to put sji as 1st choice, but we can only appeal if we put sji as 1st choice rite? our choices :-

1st choice - sji
2nd choice - maris stella
3rd choice - clementi town
4th choice - ?
5th choice - ?
6th choice - ?

:?: :?: :?: pls advise.
