RE: DSA 2022

Agree!! Depends a lot on the child's academic abilities & learning attitudes .
That's a tricky question since much depends on the student and the school he/she has DSA'd into. If the student does struggle, it's hard to say if that is due to the IP program or whether the sports demands are excessive or if there are other external factors.
What I do know is that some schools (perhaps many schools) which have admitted students via the DSA route actually monitor the students' performance and will step in if they see that the student is struggling. Transitioning into secondary school is a challenge in and of itself, what more when the student is expected to perform in an extra-curricular activity. Yes, I believe that the expectation is that the student performs. So the pressure on the child is higher which warrants closer monitoring and intervention from the school, if things start to wobble.
That said, I also know of students who do really well as they enjoy the academic program and are passionate with their sport. They thrive because they are given an opportunity to showcase their capabilities. They also appreciate the facilities and exposure provided by the school so it's ultimately a win-win scenario.
But, as I said, much depends on the student and the school. It's not always a perfect match which is why I think engaging with the school early is key. You need to know what the DSA approach, program, support etc. are like and only proceed with eyes open
& tbh, very very few parents share on \"failure\" cases
(For obvious reasons!), so many thought ok la,strike lottery ,just take lor.. but if they do not \"know\" their kids \"well\",they may be sending the kids to 4-6years of struggles, can end up getting a low self-esteem kid(I saw real examples),I think this is so unwise..
& fyi not all schools bother to monitor kids who dsa into schools which are much better than their psle score & render help when kids need obviously...
Don't leave this to luck & regret!
I know of 1 real case..not even IP,but is a good neighbourhood school, ard cop 243..1 child dsa in using sports, psle score 200,just make it to express ..fail maths all the way to sec4,other subjects also weak, but need to take 2× Pure science as combined science is not offered,so even though failed both pure science at end sec3, not able
To change to combined science..end up, for this yr o level,\"drop\" pure chem & Amath, never go for exam..
& low-self-esteem, avoid talking to friends as they are mostly smarter, through the 4 years! I feel if the child went to a school which is just a bit better than own psle score, would have been able to bring out academic potential much better...
Another case I know is,gal from Nanyang pri,got 250 can go Nygh with affiliation, but parents decide not to let their gal go,coz they feel is not a good fit, though her gal took HCL at psle, but she is not so good & they feel she does not suit IP,& prefer to go another mission co-ed school..& is doing well there!!
With leadership opportunities etc..
So key is: KNOW your Child's learning abilities & character well..if a child feel inferior easily, then I feel should not go to a school which is much better thru DSA, as there is a high chance the child may \"break\" easily, emotionally..
& very stressful to commit to the sports cca & manage the higher demands in academic..
Key is: a child need to be Happy, then can be confident of themselves, & able to face challenges bravely & positively.
Oops! Pardon for long sharing:) hope this helps!
All the BEST! -

Don't waste time to do PV/put on waitlist...not worth the trouble:)
What waitlist??
Standard of teaching drop tremendously!
SAP school but not much material for chinese even for p6!!..in comparison to elder child's school,non-sAp but gave lot of notes to teach Compo, compre skills, oral ,practice worksheet etc,& go thru in class..
Maths & science also very lacking in material & teaching in comparison..
I guess school assume/expect parents to send kids for tuition for all 4 subjects..
With Covid affecting this year's p6 for 2 years with HBL in P5,& 1st batch guinea pig in new AL grading system...
I did not see more effort from school, to help the students, esp weak classes,
Tbh, it become like just sending to student care...very disappointing..
&
I am sharing with good intention to warn parents to keep closer watch ln your kids...i take up my time to write & share & i do not get anything in return ,esp i have no more younger kids ,so even if school step up & improve,it does not benefit me at all.
So no flaming please..(any flaming will be ignored!) -

But you may have many rich and spoilt girls to deal with so which is the lesser evil.
(I did NOT post for a very long time..cannot refrain when I read the above:)
The big difference is there are no randy rowdy boys to deal with in SMSS.
Just to share..in smss..the proportion of rich & spoilt girls is very very small percentage(in fact, unheard of in past 2.5yr),compared to many other girls schools(thou shall not name)..
& being a Christian/Anglican school,
The values they inculcate,& their school environment,is much more conducive than many other mid-top tier girls school(again, thou shall not name)..
Smss has very strict school rules..
Eg.hp has to be OFF during school hours..OFF! NoT silent mode..
Even After school hours, can only ON in canteen..during random checks,if hp is found to be on silent mode, confiscated (including SIM card) for 1 month!!
So far, this is the strictest rule I come across..BUT the girls abide by it & I am proud to say..my gal is not addicted to gadgets & she also puts her hp away, when she is studying at home(i know coz when I need her to help do something, I message her, she does not read at all! I have to call home! Haha)
& yes..smss higher chinese is weak..BUT coz they only have 1-2 class taking, there is proper attention from teacher! Her hcl teacher assured me that there is no need for tuition, just study & do her homework is good enough..(so far, this is the 1st teacher who dare to tell me no need tuition!)& she is very motivating..she encourage her students to take part in competitions,my gal took part in newspaper editing competitions which they won in some category(just to say..1 IP school did not win anything..)
& also essay writing competitions (my gal's essay did not win those top3 prize etc but will be published in a book..)other teachers generally are good(of course on off u get 1/2 who are more slacked..which schools do not?:)
My friend's gal was fm a neighbourhood school..can choose betw smss & crescent girls(same situation as my gal)..was worried abt smss being a Christian school coz they are non-christian..end up chose Smss, aft checking with me,& also coz smss is SLIGHTLY nearer/more convenient & no regrets, her gal settled in very well!!(we did not choose crescent coz of other reasons, besides distance)
Also, smss is one of the few schools which has string ensemble as cca..& coz the school give opportunity to every student, they interviewed EVEry sec3 for all the posts which I was surprised as it is tedious for the teachers but this really give equal opportunities to every gal!! & the exposure in string ensemble motivated my gal& helped her to jump 4 grades for her violin from grade 4 to 8(this is her 2nd instrument which she learned from mid p4)..(oh ya! Crescent only has band cca:)MY GAL was telling me,even if she make it to top girl school, she is just a small fish in a big pond(i personally went thru that:),
& even if she also can join string ensemble, she probably will feel inferior as she started late on violin, the impact/outcome,will be very different..
Lastly, smss is also affiliated to SAJC
.if SAJC is no big deal to u,then this is not a reason to ponder over:)
Just sharing what I know.
In case it helps in any way ,to anyone
.NO flaming Please!! (I have no time to respond to any,if there is..) thanks & good luck!
