      Hi,

I am a SAHM, residing at Sengkang.

I am trying to find a special small school with patient caring teachers for my speech delayed 3 year old DD. Unable to send her to any pre nursery around the area as she cannot verbalise her needs. She love to play with other children but always get rejected as she has yet to be able to express herself (she put on a smile and just pull the hands of other children to invite them to play)

      Appreciate any advice. Thank you.

i have a friend whose DD has asperger syndrome and cant communicate so much like other normal kids. she is 5 but intellectually not so advanced i think. MMI (i think its pasir ris) accepts her.

but seriously i think u shd just send ur child to speech therapy.
my boy had speech delay at 2yr 9mths and went for 10mths speech therapy and made great improvements. he cant pronounce many sounds eg s, f, h, etc. now he speaks normally. he went to Leapfrog at 144 bt timah rd, near KKH. ask for michelle - the best therapist. she is the director too. i saw 3 therapist (mt A, leapfrog and KKH), n michelle was the only one that gave a correct diagnosis.

if its just speech delay, no need special sch. unless got other issues like autism etc

Thank you so much for sharing. My DD has had few sessions of therapy with Leo Megan. DD was on the brink of tears on the last therapy session before I decided to stop. No diagnosis was given, but the therapist said that the progress will be very slow. I was advised by PD to stop the therapy sessions and go for a formal assessment. DD cannot verbalise her needs for daily necessities, no normal schools that I have asked since 9 months ago want to do the additional work above the norm, plus most parents will be concerned that DD will take up additional time from the teacher and slowed down the progress of learning for the other children.

I have got a list of some schools with special needs teacher from the PD under http://www.cel.sg. DD likes very much to have friends to play with, even though she may not express herself well. I do hope I can find her a place that she can grow and progress.

who is Leo Megan? wat kind of therapist?

do seriously bk an appt with michelle of Leapfrog 67331992. she is very professional and nice and knows how to handle kids. dont go for other therapists there. not that they re no gd, but becos i hv tried only michelle and i trust only her. and she is the honest type.

when my #3 cant pronounce only s sound at 2+, i brought her to see michelle she did assessment and said no need therapy cos my girl has tongue strength etc no issues, just need more time to develop, unlike my boy who really had issues, and true enuf my #3 can pronounce s later. so she wont recommend u therapy just to earn ur $.

those hmwk that she recommend u, u must dililgently and religiously do iit URSELF. no teacher will do for u. then the child will improve. i did them for 9 mths.

            see http://leap-frogs.com/about/michelle-tham

is ur child delayed only on speech or other areas also?

My friend's girl was diagnosed wif asperger at 2 or 3plus. had tons of therapy including occupational, music, speech etc at various plcs. now the girl is 5, slower than others by 1 yr but had improved a lot as in she can talk already and not so scared of pple.

do get an assessment from michelle. its ex, ard $180 but she is experienced. i hv tried kkh n mt alvernia ones but only michelle told me my boy who was salivating at the mouth - that that is a problem wif lack of sensitivity that's why salivate.

since ur a a sahm, u wld hv time to do the therapy hmwk ur self

by the way, dont go for angmoh therapist. that's my experiencce.

when my boy has handwriiting issues at 4 (his arm is above the table, not resting on it when he writes, and his wrist was bent), i sent him to dynamics therapy, the angmoh said he is ok. but i didnt gv up becos at 4 he cant write even on the line. his words will fly up n down. later i sent him to brainfit studio brain gym n he improved a lot after 2-3 mths..
u can try that also. brainfit studio at goldhill. their programs are gd and they accept both normal and special kids. see Moon Chong for appt.

if u do go, say recommend by me and i think got referral discount.
but that is not the pt, brainfit has brain gym, listening programme, etc they will do pre n post course evaluation to show u the results.

my boy is also not very advanced type. normal but still very immature type

ur girl only 3, still hv time to rectify. but first find out what is the issue wif her. just speech or other devtal areas.

                  Hi 24hr-mum,

Sorry just chanced upon this thread.

                  4) Han language kovan for compo and compre (my primary kids)
                  5) Home tutor for science (the school at serangoon area closed down so we got the teacher to come to our house)
                  6) Jan & Elly for phonics for my pre-schooler
                  7) Lorna Whiston creative english for my pre-schooler
😎 CL speech & drama at Han Language at FLS
                  9) Ballet at Crestar for my preschooler

24hr-mum, Thank you so much for taking the time to put the information together, and writing them out. I have taken down the details and will check out the places on the web.

Leo Megan therapy center was referred by a PD, and Megan is a Chinese therapist. DD is a cautious kid, take time to warm up to strangers, and the impatience and lack of eye contact by the therapist probably did not help much. Some PDs and specialist also behave in the same manner, when DD do not respond to their questions, even though her reaction is the reason why I brought DD to their clinic or centers.

The most recent PD I visit did not rush to do a psychological assessment for mild autism assessment, prefer to wait another 3 mths when DD turned 3.

DD like to babble, make silly sound, but do not talk much. She use single syllabus word or make the sound of the 1st part of a word , but recently she progressed to 2 or 3 syllabus word. She has problem pronouncing some words like letters - like p, w, l etc. I am probably the only one who can guessed her correctly most of the times.

Her ability to express has some gap with her understanding, and gets easily frustrated. Her hearing is not perfect but ok, and better after a recent minor ear surgery at kKH. She turns better after 2 years old and can respond to me brieftly (that's when I know she understands the A,B,Cs and 1,2,3 I been teaching her since age 1). She recognise all letters, say most of them, and recognise 1-25, say some of them. Can understand opposite phase like up and down, over and under. BUT she utter words out of the blue like bus, snake, truck, fly kite when none was in sight. Can see she's trying hard to communicate but do not how....by using words she knows...hard to have a interative conversation with her. Monolingual for now - only english.

Now She holds eye contact with people, is pretty affectionate towards other children, and good with sharing of toys etc. She cannot write, but scribble a lot. Reluctant to feed herself and drink from cup, and take 8 months to potty train for day time, and some times preferred to remain quiet and make a mess.

I try to guide her using information from a book \"it takes 2 to talk\" for parents of children with language delay. She has attended wkend music classes and holiday enrichment course, all accompanied by parents, but will still cry for some time each day before settling down.

My PD recommended physiotherapy and speech therapy at novenal medical center for another 3 years, then proceed to do formal assessment. I will be sticking to this and assess the situation along the way, while looking out for other courses and ways to help DD. PD said DD can go to a normal school, but so far no schools that I have been to, are receptive enough to take DD in (even those franchise branded ones). A kind mummy has directed me to Early Intervention Centre at Goldhill Plaza. This has given me more options to explore.

Appreciate all the sharing and advices

ok if u need 2nd opinion, do explore leapfrog

the babbling part and saying words out of the blue is a bit worryg to me cos my friend’s asperger girl also like that, till now when she is 5 - suddenly cry n suddenly laugh wif no apparent reason.

but cant do writing or tracing is normal for some kids at 2, but on the other hand given flash card tracing or practising prewriting bks but no hurry. the speech part i feel is more critical.
at least u dont deny the issue. some mums kept denying and delaying the intervention for the poor child. the prob can persist n wont outgrow if its really an issue.

do monitor even if the child started therapy. some sessions are not effective and just like see doctors, some medicien work, some dont if the diagnosis is wrong. its a subjectv thing
