In gal's J1 class, alrdy there are pupils who take up 4 H2 plus 1 H1....
There are bound to hv pupils taking H3 subj comes next yr since hers being one of the Top classes...
One does what one deems fit n best ....it's no gurantee tt taking 4 H2 is the best choice... -

Augmum, seriously, I don't understand my DD. One minute she tells me she wants to drop one subject to H1 (when she is so frustrated with her studies) n today, she tells me she wants to take up 1 H3 subject (when she is in a good mood).
Since its only the 3rd month of JC1, I guess we have to wait n see what is her level of coping with her studies n where her strengths n weaknesses lie in.

If not , it will be difficult,if she is taking all 3H2 subject for humanities( Econ, Lit, History. My girl has started lessons full swing and I can see that it can be a real challenge. She's a Humanities girl and there is a ton of reading to do. Homework is a daily affair and grades have already been given. Not having written for so long after the 'O' levels, she is of course struggling to put pen to paper. The ability to write well is so important as our exams are all assessed via the written word. And if she can't interpret and communicate well, her 2 years in JC will be wasted. Am actually thinking of sending her to the British Council or The Cognitive Hub (recommended by her friend's sister who scored an A for GP and swears by their teachers). Anyone heard of them?
Would appreciate input and comments from experienced parents and students. To send or not to send?
If she switched to Humanities program in JC, then she should read widely ... Pre condition to writing is reading. I guess any external help (British council ) is probably late at this stage. Each Weekend must finish one Literary Novel.
Reading Sat/Sunday times articles would help as well(Especially one pager from overseas news journel. -

I would say there's little co-relation between Literature and subjects like Economics and Geography. They're very different in studying style and technique IMO.

You don't need to finish one literary novel each weekend to improve on your reading/ comprehension/ writing abilities (and if you did, I don't think you'd really benefit fully because you'd be speed-reading a lot. I cannot imagine reading a novel like Wuthering Heights in one week). In fact, I would say reading good newspapers or magazines might be just as, and possibly more helpful (and they take up less time). The Economist, The Atlantic, BBC, The Guardian and New York Times have some excellent editorials and articles (which would come in very handy in GP as well).
@bakababa: I didn't find tuition necessary (but to be fair, I've always liked English as a subject) and the extensive readings your daughter does would probably help over time. She sounds like she just needs more practice - maybe get her to try some questions and get feedback from her teachers? It might be good to seek their advice on how to improve in this aspect too. -

If you don't take Lit or ELL as one of the humanity subject , you don't need read Literary novel. Subject combination is varied for Humanities program. MOE Humanity centers (Top 7 JC) & ELEP scholership program Warrants English language as mandatory H2 subject. Obviously i was assuming either of english subject would be must to be considered at Humanity student.

Econ , though considered officially as Human subject is informally considered as Humanity & Science stream. My DD was forced to take Econs over history because her good grades in A & E maths. JC doesn't know those grades were with tution in A-maths at O-level. :roll:
As a side note 2 human & 2 science subject is considerd as Science stream , hence you have to compete with better cutoff. Because of this, you have to take Econ + 2 human subject once admitted in Arts programs.
