      slmkhoo:

The way I see it, all that has happened is that the JC places have been moved around. If existing JCs expand their intake, they will have space to take in students with higher points, and COPs will fall. The JCs cannot keep their COPs unchanged if they still have vacancies.

And I expect that one of the main factors for selecting which JCs to close is whether student nos. are falling. Those with falling enrolments are likely to be the least popular (ie. highest COP figures?)

And it is true that a good no. of A level students will not make it to university; that is the case now and this closure of JCs will not change that. Students (and their parents) should understand this at the outset, surely?
Have you heard of SIM GE, Kaplan, JCU, MDIS, PSB? These are local private universities offering degree courses for those A level students who can't secure a place or a choice course in local uni. Though most will require a minimum of 3H2 passes and a pass in O level Eng for the A level students, it's not exactly unachievable for most. Our latest stats shows 92.6% of our A level students has obtained at least 3H2 passes with a pass in GP.

        floppy:

        CJC / ACJC / NYJC - affiliation.

Next nearest alternative: AJC. No affiliation. That's one less group of stakeholders to worry about.
I dread to see AJC fall from a single-digit COP to a double-digit COP.
during my time, after the big 5 JC, this is the JC to go to....(based on COP)

          ...

Then if their GPA CMI, they realize that most of our local unis don't want them and their 2+ GPA and regret. You need almost perfect GPA to go to our local U

          ...

I don't see the validity of this argument.

You will also need near perfect A level results to make it to our local U (unless you are willing to take whatever course they offer).

I think he is comparing the ease to get to U via JC or Poly route irregardless of course. Certainly dont need near perfect A level result to get to courses like Arts[/quote]But isn't that the result of the streaming process?
There are more top students going to JC so naturally more will end up getting a place in local unis.
Same for top kids choosing a certain R school => more will get into med school n law

              Yup. That's true too.

Actually I think the COP for most JCs will fall next year with the top JCs having to expand their cohort intake. Viewing it more positively, it will be easier to get into Ri/HCI than previously šŸ˜„

It seems like anderson jc bore the brunt of the merger as she was a convenient choice. SRJC is nowhere near AJC. As a compensation, AJC should be allowed to retain her name. Looking at the names floating around Internet, I would imagine AJC to be the most miserable one.

It was no. 6 to 8 and after the top 5 in the past. It was a 'neighbourhood' JC and was the top choice for most of the better students who stayed in the North but weren't willing to travel to the 3 JCs in Bukit Timah, the 1 JC in Bedok and the 1 JC in Marine Parade.

Even today, while no longer among the top choices, it has a healthy and good intake of students. I agree it is just a matter of convenience for SRJC to merge into AJC and not really due to 'falling' numbers for AJC.

Agree. SRJC is nearest to NYJC while its current COP is closest to CJC.
But I doubt any decision published is reversible.
