      wonderm:
I am also glad that you started this thread. Hopefully we see more sharing from parents with kids in JC.

But I guess by this age, the kids are more independent, hence parents are usually less involved.

Thanks wonderm. Actually, I am very kiasu (so I think KSP suits me very well). I wanted to find out more about the other JCs not mentioned in KSP since the IP ones already have the individual school parent networking group.

I hope to hear from parents whose children are already or will be going to JCs like Meridian/Victoria/Anderson/Nanyang etc. This is in preparation for my ds who will be sitting his O levels next year (2015).

Also, want to know how mainstream O level students transition to JC life too.

      Can parents share?

      Thanks.

I would like to know more about nyjc, tjc and Vjc
I am also interested in Milliena institute . Have heard of it lately . May I know if the students cope better with 3 years of studying for A levels instead of 2 ?
        Thank you !
Last but not least , happy new year !!

Not a parent but a student going to J2 this year… I can say that JC life is really really different from secondary, esp with pace of lectures, more independent learning (your teachers will not chase you to do your tutorials unless you are doing v badly), and must have discipline to finish the amount of work. Plus prioritize what hwk to do because sometimes it’s just not possible to complete all if you want to sleep.

I will be enrolling my daughter in MI this year. We just returned from overseas a few mths ago and we think a 3-yr programme is more suitable for her (she is not very strong academically and will have to adjust to the Singapore curriculum too). Anyway, we heard that quite a no. of JC1 students repeat JC1, so that ends up being 3 yrs also. Can't say more until school starts.

There is some discussion of various JCs and polys in the 'tertiary' thread. You may want to have a look there.

There is not much active discussions on JCs/Polys etc.

As many parents are Sec School hunting, I am sure many parents are also JC/Polys hunting too. Every JC has its own strengths n styles, so it will be good if students in JCs can share about their JCs for us, parents to make a wise/correct choice.

                jtoh:
zeemimi, it depends on the schools. Some IP schools start term next week, some in mid to late Jan. And no, I don't think JAE students will miss out at all. I don't think they start proper classes until the JAE students join the schools. I think the IP schools which start early are probably those which do not admit JAE students. Maybe other parents can confirm this.

                Tks jtoh.
Another thing I'm concerned about is whether the jae students generally fit well into ip schools since they are the minority. Wonder if any parents can share about this.

I went to ACSI in year 5 and being from O levels wasn't a problem at all. Social wise, in the early OG days, I asked the IP boys a lot about the school (culture, where is this place and that place, how's the teachers, cca etc), so that was mostly the conversation starter, and they were very willing to share. Furthermore, they may not be in the same OG as their year 1-4 clique, so they are also sort of mixed with strangers in the beginning. After the O levels people got the uniforms, I don't think there was any segregation in terms of IP vs non-IP. Mainly we just thought of ourselves as one OG and all our goal was to bond as an OG, make friends and have fun. It's the same after being allocated to our classes. The IP boys will not necessarily be with their clique, so it's not very difficult to befriend them.
Academic wise, the IP boys had the advantage initially, as for ACSI's case, IB and O level are totally different in terms of coursework and expectations. But again, they were willing to share what knowledge they have of the system and content, some of which they have already learned.
I think as long as one is willing to take the initiative, it is not difficult to befriend the IP people. Of course, there can be some cliques that are very difficult to break into. Well then, there are hundreds of other students around to befriend.

No she didn't. Just evaluating the choices available.

Heads up, this coming week is where many jcs will be having open house, so if you’re interested in a particular jc, do rmb to go down to their open house.
