Singapore Chinese Girls School (Secondary)

LOL. SCGS is forever like that. they will always discriminate against the girls who are not from SC pri
:? HUH? I was not from SC pri, but went to SC Sec. Remember my time there with fondness. There was never never never any discrimination between SC pri/non-SC pri - I only remembering with awe at gossip/info about some girls whose mothers, and even grandmothers attended SC.
I would dare say all my friends (esp those non-SC pri) are proud of our school and proud of our time there.
It's the bonding that I experienced, and even continue to experience (meeting ex-SC girls in work) - the part about being from SC that makes me want to choose a school with history for my own boys (unfortunately no girls). -

Yo CUBEgenre, welcome and thanks for adding your thoughts and feel.Hi, I am a student in SC secondary currently.
for parents who are considering scgs as a sch for your child, i say go for it. sc has changed me a lot, for the better. it has instilled in me strong public speaking skills and writing skills; i find myself much more confident in front of strangers and it has taught me the virtue of kindness.
anyone with queries regarding scgs is always welcome to pm me
Enjoy your time in the school...I think the sec sch years are really the ones where memories are made. Till this day, my best friends are those I made in SC.
Besides the teachers (some of whom have left the school already), I miss the meepok!!! -
Hi,
can anyone share with me the culture of SCGS? Are their teachers caring and dedicated? How’s the leadership and mgt of the school? How’s their students like?
Thanks -

Well it depends. There are cliques etc but which school does not have them. However, most of the girls come from super rich families so quite \"atas\". Someone related a story that in one class all the parents had cars except one girl and she was kinda of ostracized. The teachers are not on the ball as most students take tuition for all the subjects. So no real need to put in extra effort as the tuition teachers take care of the results.Hi,

Hi all, I’m a student in SCGS, using my mum’s account to say this. SCGS really is a good school. I’m a prefect and it’s been extremely enjoyable working with others. Being in a top-tier class, I also have many opportunities to showcase my talents, whether in academics or arts. I also love my CCA (choir). The teachers are friendly and caring, and so are the people. Rest assured your daughters will be in good hands when they come to SCGS. Feel free to ask me anything too.
-
By the way, we don’t really pick on others based on appearance. And the scolding incident mentioned earlier, it was out fault as we failed to uphold our usual standard of conduct. Please don’t use this minor incident to affect your decision.
Rest assured that your daughters will feel at home in SC, no matter what their background. -
ordinary-person,
My dd’s best friend was formely from SCGS. I am impress with her english and more importantly, her general conduct- confident, graceful and likeable despite coming from a very well-to do family. I also have had encountered one girl from my church also formely from SCGS. She was from the pri section, came in with mediocre PSLE T-score, passed out with good O-level result and is currently in her 1st year at Melbourne University, Australia. Certainly SCGS adds value.
Your school excels in english, literature and maths. Excellence in ccas include arts in particular dance and for sport is squash and gymnastic. -
My daughter just finished sec one at scgs, got in under DSA and then qualified academically anyway. It was a very good year for her, made many friends. Teachers are caring. They are strict about producing fine Asian ladies as evident by their attention to even how the girls sit - even when a chair has an upright back, the girls are expected not to lean against it but to straigten their backs. I like, even though the girls may not all appreciate that all the time.
Their language arts program is really solid - they actually teach different styles of writing and students have to master the theory and apply it to the writing. Useful science project that applies what they learn by building a device that meets certain aims.
Some teachers may be still pining for the former principal who stayed many years, but the current principal is a smart lady and the school will continue to do well under her I am sure. -
Despite all the above comments about scgs, i feel that the school does not do enough to recognize the achievements of the pupils, be it past or present. For instance, i heard it from one of my friends that students there are not rewarded for their academic achievements after they have left the school for the integrated program in secondary 2. :x In this case, i feel that it is somewhat unreasonable of scgs to do so as they have actually worked hard in the school for their sec 2 year. :?

What do you mean by not rewarded for their academic achievements after they have left the school? What kind of rewards are you referring to? SC has been rewarding and recognising their past students. -
the merit award that is given to the top 20 students in the level. however, if the students leave the school before completing their 4 years of secondary education there, they would not be allowed to attend the annual prize giving ceremony in march. thus, the award which was rightly theirs would be given to another student. their position in the level for that academic year would also not be recognized in the honor board.
-
Worried 123 - I am an SCGS alumni and my daughter has just finished Sec 4. There is no honor board for merit award winners. The awards are given prospectively, but based retrospectively. In other words, you do well in Sec 2, you get the award for your Sec 3 year. Rather like a scholarship. Logically, why would SCGS give out a scholarship if the child is no longer in the school?
It’s a great school if you want an all rounded girl who can carry herself well in public. -
The last 2 or 3 Head Prefects of the school were not SCGS primary alumnis so don’t worry, your “outsider” girls won’t be discriminated against.
-
i was referring to the honor roll, which is pinned on the notice board.
in this case, it will be very unfair to the students who perform well. take for instance, should the student top her cohort in that particular year, then the award would be given to the second student in level. -
worried123:
Hmmm....this is as if you are saying that when a high performing employee resigns from a company, the company should continue to pay him/her bonus and continue to label him/her as the best employee of the year. Do let us know if there are such companies or schools in Singapore that practise this and how this practice affects the morale of the existing employees or students.i was referring to the honor roll, which is pinned on the notice board.

worried123:
Other schools practise this as well, not just SCGS.i was referring to the honor roll, which is pinned on the notice board.

Good chance! Even if you are cut out due to higher cop which is rather unlikely, you will have no difficulties in launching a successful appeal.
Aim to represent the school in chinese dance during lower sec and progress to their famous classical dance team during upper sec and you will graduate with good cca record.
