Dear Integer,
2 yrs ago, ds sec 2 history text was Singapore - From Settlement to Nation, Pre-1819 to 1971. We bought GLM guide cum exercises bk - Understanding History by Margaret Tan.Integer:
Hi,
Anyone uses Singapore: The making of a nation state :1300-1975 for Sec 1 History text? Possible to recommend a good assessment book for this? Thank you so much!
Maybe can check whether GLM has come up with their guide for yr history text?
P.S The bk we had the cover was badly designed - u need to flip to contents page inside to see that it is meant for the relevant history text.
Thank you for the sharing!
I was at Popular earlier this morning but couldn't find any assessment on Sec 1 History at all. I just found out from this forum a couple of seconds back at the geography thread that due to a change in syllabus for geography and history, most publishers have not finalised the printing and hence there is no new guide book available yet. I guess I just have to be patient and will look for for GLM guide cum exercise at a later date.
No prob, usaik

I encountered this problem of finding guide books too.
there were not many to select from…those avail on the shelves were not very suitable. however, I bought GLM history by Margaret tan for both sec 1 and 2. the change of syllabus will cause a delay as authors need time.
if you need to check out reference guides, it would be helpful to go to the bigger stores like lot 1 and clementi mall. -

for history they need to understand the events beyond the surface level to score well. different guidebooks may give different angles
Totally agreed. I did look through my DS exam papers. The papers require some level of inference and opinions. Like an open book comprehension text. -

Stuff related to history, I can still be of some help...but nothing related to inferential stuff at all. Brain has started to reject working too hard :rotflmao: -
The 2014 Sec 1 History is a new syllabus and the guide-book publishers have yet to fully grasp the subject. So what you actually need is either a current school teacher who can point you in the right direction or someone well-versed in the Source-Based Qn Skills and Structured Essay Skills.

See quite a few questions about Sec 1 History here, and feel for the parents who are looking for Sec 1 guide books. As you can see there is a dearth of guide books.
If you have any questions related to History, please feel free to pm me and I’ll try and answer (I’m not promoting tuition classes here–just offering some advice for parents who feel lost and worried).
I used to teach History and Social Studies in Band 1 sec schools for those of you who want to know who you’re talking with, and I’m familiar with the new syllabi. My last graduating classes scored majority distinctions (one of them was the weakest in the entire cohort) so I might be able to help answer your questions about revision strategy, syllabus, exam marking standards, etc.
Actually, besides inference questions, what is your nightmare as far as your DS/DD’s educational future is concerned?
How will your ds/dd’s performance in history/ss impact his/her future, in your opinion?
I ask because I have come across students and parents who ‘give up’ on history/social studies and prefer to focus on math, science, or geog…what is your take? -
it’s risky to "give up" social studies, since it is compulsory and especially so if it is the only humanities subj.

Zeemimi, absolutely agree. And the critical thinking skills honed thru history/ss (e.g. how to decide if a source is worth believing) are crucial to success in higher education and at work.
