Hi TAS,
May I know whether Usborne young reading should be a suitable level for k1 or k2 children? -
junemum72:
Hi junemum72,Hi, my son is K2 and what books you can recommend for him?
Recently I borrowed Dr Seuss from the library (the cat in the hat etc) and realise most words are too difficult for him.
If the words are too difficult, perhaps you could put these words
down on index cards and use them as flash cards to get him to
recognize these words? I think it would be good for K2 students
to be able to start to recognize words from books like Dr Seuss.
There are some other books that are good for his age.
1) Solomon Crocodile by Catherine Rayner
In this book, Solomon is a crocodile who loves to play with the
other animals but his idea of play often gets him into trouble
with the rest of the animals. But then one day, someone
turns up wanting to play just like Solomon. Who is this and
why is he or she like Solomon?
Even before the child reads, you can entice him to read by telling
him the skeleton of the story and leave unanswered questions
behind. In this way, he would want to read more to find out.
2) The tiger skin rug by Gerald Rose
In this book, there is this tiger who does not want the life
of a tiger in the wild. He spends his days gazing at the Rajah's
palace and longs to be inside. So one day he gets an idea-
to pretend to be a tiger rug in the palace. Follow him on his
adventures in the palace. The words used in this book
are a little harder than Dr Seuss but it is an interesting read.

No we do not have the second volume out yet. We have just published
a synthesis guidebook but that is only for TAS students. We are
going to publish a vocabulary book within the next few months that
are for both TAS and non-TAS students.

Michael Morpurgo's books are quite descriptive
and so would help a child pick up descriptive
writing. However as with all books, the child needs
to make a conscious effort to learn the style of writing
from the author. The themes he covers in his stories are
also quite adult but written from the understanding of
a child. I would recommend his books to children.

XK:
Hi XK,Hi TAS,
May I know whether Usborne young reading should be a suitable level for k1 or k2 children?
They are more suitable for K2 kids but if the K1 one kid can read
quite well then he or she would have no problem with the series.

Sorry for the late reply.
These are some of the good books that
we can recommend:
1) Long Reach by Peter Cocks
In this story, 17 year old Eddie wakes up one day to find a
policeman at his door telling him that they found his older
brother's dead body. Later on, it is concluded that his older
brother committed suicide. He refuses to accept that and
starts to try to find out more about his brother.
He finds out that his brother was working undercover
and soon he is doing the same thing while trying to
find out what really happened to his brother.
It is an action-packed thriller.
2) Pig Heart Boy by Malorie Blackman
This is book that is different from most books. It tells
of a boy who urgently needs a heart transplant but
the best match comes from a very unexpected
source- a pig! What will his friends say? Will his body
be able to adjust to the heart of a pig? It is the biggest
decision that Cameron (the boy) can make.
It is a thought-provoking story and the vocabulary
used is good as well.
As for the Gone series, I think Lies and Plague is out as
well.
All the best for your daughter's PSLE!

hiHi, TAS
I've tried asking DS to read some of those books you recommended (he's in P3 now) but I think they're too difficult for him He told me there're too many words that he didn't understand and stop reading them altogether. Maybe his standard of English is just not there yet... Ended up reading those books myself, and I must say there are really interesting
Can you recommend some other books that is probably easier to read for P3? He doesn't really like to read and even if he does, he usually just sticks to one or two of his favourite titles (e.g. Beast Quest).
Thank you very much!
I also a parent of p3 boy.ur right,he also like to read beast quest.I think upper primary books hard for them -
Hi TAS,
Are Enid Blyton Happy Days Series and Nancy Drew and the Clue Crew Series suitable for P1 students?
Helps with their writing?
