MOE Kindergarten

Children at preschool age are like sponges. They absorb very fast. So we have to be careful what we expose them to. Of course as parents, we need to b mindful of instruction methods n environment to engage them and cultivate positive attitudes to learning.
It is thus a complexed job as parents to decide what’s best. -

so it all depends how each child takes it.I don't know whether I will send my kids for enrichment on phonetics/spelling/han yu pin yin if i were to send them to moe kindy as I think i can teach them. The only constraint would be time and energy since i am a full time working mum.
From http://www.moekindergarten.edu.sg/ask-us:
12.\tDoes the curriculum adequately prepare my child for Primary 1?
The curriculum aims to nurture the children holistically so that they are self-confident, have strong social skills and foundational literacy and numeracy skills. These will lay the foundation for their future learning and facilitate children’s transition into formal schooling.
13.\tWhat will the K2 curriculum be like?
Will there be greater emphasis on preparing for Primary 1?The curriculum which comprises two flagship programmes, the HI-Light Programme and Starlight Literacy Programme, is intended for both K1 and K2. The curriculum aims to nurture the children holistically so that they are self-confident, have strong social skills and foundational literacy and numeracy skills. These will lay the foundation for their future learning and facilitate their transition to primary school.
I remember last time i just learnt all those in school, no such enrichment classes...today is just a total different ball game. No wonder so many enrichment/tuition centres are making money. Sigh. I don't know when I will succumb to the pressure and jump on the bandwagon to send my kids. :(
I'm also a FTWM & yet to start my boy on any enrichment. Sometimes it's kinda stressful when I hear comments that so & so kids can read/ write/ do maths already, etc etc. I don't need him to be scholar; all I ask is that he'll have a smooth transition & can cope with pri sch. sigh. -
My ds goes for enrichment in English and Chinese. He can read some Chinese characters and limited English words. Still mix up numbers and letters of the alphabet, don’t know Math. I am not seeking to cultivate a scholar too.
Life skills are equally important so do also help them develop life skills to survive. -

a fellow parent commented that MFS did not prepare her daughter (smart & obedient type) well for pri 1 & she's now having difficulties playing catchup. so I'm kinda worried for my boy. also I feel that MFS curriculum is kinda slow for him (e.g. they only just started teaching letters & letter sounds in N2 when he already learnt all of them from leapfrog at 18mths). actually MK & MFS' curriculum sounds pretty similar - \"learn thro play\", no spelling/ting xie, no HYPY, etc. wonder if they'll be sufficiently prepared for pri 1. guess enrichment is unavoidable. sigh. the only benefit I see in transferring him to MK is to get him used to a pri sch environment. shldn't MOE do something to the pri sch syllabus to keep them more in line with the preschool syllabus??? why is there a need for enrichment in order for the kid to cope in pri 1???
Have u been the open house? I don't think you will be exposing him to pri sch environment leh. Some of the MOE Kindy are located inside Pri schools but the classrooms are separated and primary sch kids and teachers cannot enter the kindy premise. The environment is more like a big kindergarten, not a primary school. For punggol view MOE Kindy, they are building a separate building for the MOE Kindy beside the primary school. They are only using the classrooms now since punggol view pri sch has students until pri 3 only and thus have spare rooms.marmalade:
my boy is currently in a My First Skool (MFS) in punggol. Am considering transferring him to the MOE Kindergarten (MK) at Punggol View Pri. Anyone know how the quality of the curriculum & teachers at MK compares to MFS? Any comments on the MK & KCare at Punggol View? thanks!
My child is not in MFS so I can't give much advice on this.
But question is : if your child is happy at MFS, then what is your motivation for the transfer?
my personal thoughts and observation:
quality of curriculum -
you can check out :
http://www.moekindergarten.edu.sg/our-programmes
http://www.moekindergarten.edu.sg/our-curriculum
http://www.moekindergarten.edu.sg/ask-us
so perhaps the above can help you compare with your experiences in MFS
other than no actual teaching of phonetics and HYPY, and no homework or worksheets to bring home, (there could be more differences, i may be wrong, but based on the previous posts and the website FAQ), i think the curriculum is pretty much the same compared to the rest of the preschools. The key here is HOW the teachers approach to engage the preschoolers.
quality of teachers - looks responsible & friendly, BUT this is only based on observation during the open house - haha...so only time will tell. It is extremely hard to get passionate and dedicated teachers nowadays so if your child look forward to go to school and enjoys his time there, then it should be fine, but then again, it takes time to see this into fruition.
as for KCare, the head of MK at pv claimed that the activities done in Kcare will be \"integrated\" with what kids learn in MK but based on what our fellow parent eu-earn has shared, MK@SK screened youtube to the kids. so i have my own reservations.
in short, i think MK is trying to emulate international schools where preschoolers also learn through play and project work to give a \"holistic development\" but at a very affordable rates for the masses with a \"distinct local flavour\".
Hope the above helps ! -
