• RE: Q&A - P1 English

Hi Zaannnnaz, No problem! I think \"Jill and her\" is grammatically correct as well. 😄

zannnnaz:
Thanks Lyra! Your answers enlightened me.. i am really confused which should be the answers initially...
For qns 2... can the answer be \"her\" in some instances where the person talking has a girl next to him and so he said return the pencil to Jill and her...?

• RE: Q&A - P1 English

Hi! Sharing my answers and thoughts below...

zannnnaz:
Hi, i have some questions here... hope someone can help and explain... Tia

1) My mother and (me / I) were not at home this morning.
My mother and I were not at home this morning.
Comment: Whenever I see such sentences, I try to phrase the sentence in a way to exclude the other person.
If mother was excluded, the sentence would be more correct if I use \"me\" or \"I\"?
Eg: Me was not at home this morning (not correct but kind of acceptable if this was posted on social media 😂
Eg: I was not at home this morning (correct)

2) Please return the pencil to Jill and (she/ her/ me / I).
Please return the pencil to Jill and me.
Comment: Similar to the above.

3) He almost (falls / fell) into the drain.
He almost fell into the drain.
Comment: The event has already happened, that's why I knew he almost fell and did not fall, thus, the verb should be in past tense.

Has everyone received the school’s letter? We know which class our child will be in already. The class names are long!
Some parents feel that when they learn through play, they enjoy the learning process but the reality kicks in at K1-2 when they find they are not ready for the academic rigor of our local primary schools. I have no experience with MOE kindergarten but this is what I know about the learn through play method from my friends' and my experience.

I guess it really depends on the type of \"play\"? Some play, especially if the toys or setups are well-chosen is very good. Some play, especially when it involves just pushing buttons, is just mindless. I can't speak for any particular kindy now as my kids are well past that age, but my kids played and were read to a lot before P1 (and hardly did any academic work) and haven't suffered for it.

I guess it is the reading that helps and prob your kids could learn fast haha..from my own experience, my kids did need some form of enrichment classes at preschool level :)
Kindergarten children have so many academic enrichment nowadays. Instead of having Kindergarten syllabus match up to Pri sch syllabus, won't it be good if the Primary sch pace slow down a bit more so that kindergarten students don't have to learn so many things way before they should? I think it's important not to stress the children too much now and kill their interest for learning.

Hi parents,

Do you know Oasis Primary School’s 2017 open house dates already? We wrote in to ask Oasis Pri last week but there is no response from them.

• RE: All About Violin Classes and Teachers

Thank you for the advice!

Any recommendation on where I can find a good home tutor? Not sure if I get a second violin, how I gauge measure whether the size is suitable for my son, unless I ask the tutor to help me search for a second hand violin, if his/her other students are selling...

Dear all, my son is coming to 5 years old and is currently in Yamaha JMC course for electone. Recently he has shown interest in Violin. Would u, as parents, choose a music school or hire violin teacher to teach at home? What is the difference or choosing home tutor/ school teacher? We are considering Edvox music school at Punggol Waterway point. Do u have recommendation for good violin teacher there? Would you get a second hand violin for first violin? They may have to change violin sizes often as they grow. More economic to get second hand?

If you have access to a good violin teacher to teach at home, that would probably be the most convenient. As for the violin, you may want to consider renting or borrowing the first violin. I borrowed my DD first violin (1/8 size) for about 9 months. After that, we bought our second violin (1/4 size) from a reputable violin store who also offers a good trade in program. Recently, we bought our third violin (1/2 size) from the same store and just had to top up a bit after trading in the previous violin.

Buying a second hand is an alternative, but the condition may be a question mark unless you know how to evaluate it. Even if it's in good condition, it's probably worth it only if you pay much less than half the brand new price, unless it's a very good violin.

• RE: Music Wonderland or Yamaha Junior Course?

My son and I enjoyed the Music Wonderland and now we are enjoying our YJC together. It was such happiness watching him from unable to find his middle "Do" to being able to play a melody on the keyboard. He’s only 4 year old and he only started YJC for 3 months. He went through Music Wonderland for a year and I think its kind of fun for him with the stories and the actions, and there are parts of the lesson that required him to sit in front of the keyboard/electone and that helped prepare him for the YJC lessons later on. When kid start YJC, they really have to practice almost everyday. Otherwise they will not be able to catch up. Lesson progresses very fast. We are lucky to get a good teacher. She will check each kid’s progress every lesson.
