Each year, there are a couple of broad topics (more elaboration and details are given to the students). Each group then decides on an aspect of one of the topics to do a project. Teachers will give some guidance along the way.
The above did not list the topics of PW.
Are the topics listed somewhere and applicable to all JC1 students? -

Yes, All JCs / Yr5 are given the same questions ...but the topics/ areas covered are decided by the group, subject to PW tutors' approval... -

I am very concerned about hearing students slogging almost the whole year for this PW.

I think it depends on the group. I have a daughter doing PW this year, and they seem to be taking things very slow and easy! But they are probably not expecting to get good grades anyway. In any group project, they will have to find a way to work efficiently, and someone in the group will have to make suggestions and keep things on track. Don't worry too much about it in advance - there's nothing you can do about it.

The number of drafts after drafts for different phases...disapprovements / rejections, edition after edition ...
Not to mention the difficulties in arrangement of time to meet up as everyone has different CCA n commitments...
Very time consuming .... -

It's common that Beginning phase is slow going...
