      Ks2, thanks for your consol.

BTW, us it correct just a C6 pass in O lvl CL would do so that no need take A lvl CL? With C6, wont affect the choice of faculty choosimg, maybe except those related to study of CL in uni?
No Diasyt, they need to pass O level Higher chinese to skip A level chinese.
BTW all students in our school are taking HCL, which means a pass is sufficient (provided pass English as well) to skip it in year 5 & 6.

Hi mintleaf, i asked dd to try, She got no 3 & 4 wrong. According to her this look too easy for O lvl. She said in general, the words are not difficult. Tell your son no need be discouraged. Starting its like that and i

feel, in sec, simply read chinese storybooks is not enough, newspaper, chi readers digest, listen to news can help. Jia you!!! Dont worry, i am sure under the good guidance n intensive training of his sch, he sure would improve n do well.
Your daughter did well for this pasage considering she is just beginning of S2. :rahrah:

My frank opinion is that this passage is easy compared to last year end's o level. I remembered they have 1 question like 伤心的人没有悲伤的权利,是什么含义? 5 marks.

However, last year mid year's paper was much easier and not to worry too much, they can have 2 chances to take O level CL.

My dd2 came back with article on 冰心散文 during her 3rd week of S1 and asked me to explain. That wasn't easy. :faint:

I agree with all the answers except for Q5. For that, I think ks2me's answer is somehow, better as it seems more in keeping with the gist of the passage.

My first thought on Q5 would agree with you seem that 风雨同舟 is more appropriate. If you delve into the 2nd half of the sentence, it talks about mate/friends,... who are lending a helping hand to those that are less unfortunate, 志同道合 is certainly more appropriate in this case.

This is indeed a tricky question.

I won't say I am strong in Chinese since I took it as a second language instead of HCL. However, I like the language very much.
I did Chinese as a second language too. Only the SAP schools were doing Higher Chinese during my time and I was not from a SAP school.

Hi mintleaf, my dd only slightly above average but she sure improved over the years. Btw she is taking O lvl CL in 2012. Same as yr ds?
Sorry, I thought RV send their HCL students to take O Level Chinese in year 3. DS will be taking his next year, so one year earlier than your DD.
              daisyt:
She is quite stress because recently the principal just told them, his target for them is at least an A2 for O lvl CL.
I agree with Ks2me that at your DD's level, she should not have any problem getting distinction for Chinese.
              daisyt:
Oh yes, i forget to mention, tang poems n song ci also great help but have to learn thru the hard way - memorise ....
It's good that your DD is learning poetry. I remembered a couple of conversations I could not participate in, with the Chinese, and one of them was about poetry. The other one was about 谜语. They have so many funny ones including 字谜, but I got very lost when the conversation revolves intensively around these 2 topics.

In 2002, this guy from the National Statictics Bureau of China told me that China was expected to be ranked third largest economy in 10 years time. China was ranked sixth then. Fast forward today, China is already poised to overtake Japan to be the world second largest economy! Everybody is waiting for the GDP 2009 report to confirm if China has, indeed, already overtaken Japan last year or will do so only in 2010.

The business landscape is changing and I wonder what roles Singapore will play when our kids join the workforce. This will directly impact the jobs available for their generation. Will everybody rush to pick up Chinese including the West? I know Koreans are sending their kids for Chinese classes. We know the Australian PM today speaks fluent Mandarin. Will multinational corporations continue to set up Asia Pacific headquarters in Singapore that will include China in the region that Singapore HQ manages? Or will they slice out China, like the way Japan gets taken out sometimes today, in defining the region Singapore HQ manages. This is definitely something to watch. How can Singapore differentiate herself to be competitive in this world? Why would Singapore be needed to bridge the conversation if everybody else can effectively communicate with China directly? Sometimes all we need is to have a better relationship and the goal post will change in our favour. So it's good to know the history, poetry, 谜语, etc, especially if it helps better our relationship with China and keep Singapore competitive.

When it comes to the crux, all these education we are putting our kids through is to enable them with the right skills to contribute to the economy.

又要过年了。To Daisyt, Ks2me and everybody reading...

              祝你和家人:新年快乐,万事如意,身体健康,心想事成。
              祝你的孩子:学业进补,步步高升。

The standard seems higher than what I took years ago. It's a good thing that I know now. And yes, fortunately, there are 2 chances. Thanks for the 冰心散文 title. I will take a look at it.

Interesting point. I missed the fact that the helpers are not necessarily in the same boat as the unfortunate ones. Any thoughts on why 渗透 is better than 出现 for Q4?

Immerse is probably the closest word to describe 渗透. Immerse into our daily life seem to be a better word to me than \"appear, 出现\".

When doing such exercise, to a certain extend, you are trying to guess what is in the author's mind. Sometimes, by just looking at one sentence versus reading the entire passage/paragraph can be more challenging in grasping the essence.

Grammatically, 渗透 is not a good choice.

I agree 渗透 sounded awkward here.
