My son is with the rehab section at kkh not HPB. They operate independently. Yes, u need a referral from the dr to get ears checked by ENT. U can ask your therapist to write a note to the referring dr.

He has changed many therapists already as his needs changes over the years. So we have seen at least half of the therapists in kkh rehab. Some are good, some not so good. So really by chance. His speech therapist who dealt with his articulation is quite good. Ok, simPly means that it worked for him. She’s Marie. An ang moh, so cannot remember her last name. The therapists there are pretty young. Probably not as experienced as those in private therapies but they made up for it with their enthusiasm and care. There were points when we just couldn’t make any progress and I highlighted to them. Sometimes we switched goals, sometimes we changed therapists. They all had their areas of specialty and they do job rotation after one or two years. They also offer special classes like school readiness program, social prog, group handwriting class etc. Think they also hav eipic. Now they are trying to find another kid to pair up with my son to do social skills therapy.

I don’t know how HPB works but from my sil’s recent experience, they seem highly inefficient in setting appointments.

from my observation, the therapist with my son did the same thing on his 2nd session again. Is strange cos she also asked me to do a video on my son playing, exactly what she told me on the 1st session. so the 2nd session is basically exactly the same as the 1st session. worst, is only 45mins session yet the nurse can tell me is 1hr session.

we know that there is no overnight success. cannot depend on the ST. we ve to keep talking & asking him, mayb one day he will talk, who knows…

was yr son initally at HPB den switched to kkh rehab? i wonder if my boy can switch over to kkh rehab instead.

helplessmum-no he wont ve imaginary play. he will play whatsever toys are given to him

specialboymum-just wonder, is this part & parcel of growing up? how old is yr boy now? is he attending OT? does it helps in his behaviour?
Hi Mummyjune, my boy is 7 now. Yes, they do improve as they grow up, but it is still important to have therapy to help them.

OT does help him though he started late. During the start of the new school year, he was having trouble coping with the change of environment and therefore was quite disruptive. The sensory diet and therapeutic program he went through with the OT helped to calm him down. He is also better in self regulations, eye contact and more observant to things around him. This indirectly helps in his speech and language development.

              Double E:

Haiz...and the OT suggest we do brushing for him every two hours. But how to when we are working parents and he is in full day childcare? Did your kids do brushing when they were younger?
              Hi,
My DS did brushing for over 2 years. I think it really helped to calm him down. He enjoyed it, like a massage. Helped us to bond too. We didn't brush exactly every 2hours, just worked it into our daily routine a few times a day.

              Does you son like it?

I think the OT only tried on my boy once. Not sure if he likes it as I was not there to witness, but I think he did not reject.

So you think is fine if we just try our best to brush even once a day instead of every 2 hours? The OT said brushing cannot be done at night as it may affect his sleep hence, I can only do it in the morning when he is preparing for school. If is just once a day instead of 2hours interval, I wonder how effective it is.

                  Double E,

I am not sure about once a day… we did about 5 times daily
But I remember my OT said brushing has no bad effect, unlike music therapy.
Perhaps you can try for a weekend and see if it works for your son? The brush is not very expensive. If he doesn’t like it, then use to scrub shoes 😛
