Oh my, it does sound like a lot for a 3.5yr to cope. Just wondering if your child might be overly tired from all the stimulation. I guess it also depends on how long it is per session. For a child that age, anything more than 30 mins can get rather tiring.Dear All, would like to consult those parents who are putting their children on speech therapy.
We had a ST previously who incorporated literacy and numeric coaching into her sessions. She also had basic PECs and motor-oral exercises.
We recently changed to a ST who focuses on PECs and PROMPT and would be embarking on Henan soon. However, she does not cover literacy and numeric coaching, and refers us to another special needs therapist, who in turn wants to separate literacy, numeric, pre-writing/drawing into separate sessions. She also mentions that functional communications (ie. eye-hand co-ordination, gross and fine motor skills) is lacking and should also be a separate session.
all in all it would mean that we need to put dd3 on about 4-5 sessions per week. considering that dd3 is only 3.5 yo and learning should be more integrated at this early stage, would like to hear parents' views on whether segrating different sessions at such a young age is a usual practice.
thanks in advance for advice.
Sorry, can't give u much input here. Dd1 did her ST 10 yrs back and it was less complicated than what it is now.. During her time, there was no Hanen prog in Spore. I managed to get the book and video and tried to go thru the prog wither dd1. It was a real challenge as I was not trained. So, it's good that there are good support, help and resources available now.
Guess a lot depends on the child. If you dd is not going to nursery sch at the moment, then I guess it may not be a bad idea to try her out on the various ST sessions. More importantly, just watch and observe how she is coping. Take the lead from the child. If she's too tired or overly stimulated, then perhaps pace the different progs, and not cramp all the activities at once.
Just my humble opinion  -

I've seen it at Kino
Just came across this post ....
Thanks autumnbronze. It looks very touching. Where can i buy the book in Singapore?jtoh:
If I may ...
I would like to share this book that I finished reading some weeks back.
I found it very inspiring that a parent, particularly the father, was willing to go through whatever means ie even consulting mystic healers from Africa and Mongolia just so to be able to reach out to his DS. Truly a heart-warming story.
Actually, I don't mind lending this book to anyone who is interested. Its sitting on my bookshelf. Just PM me

Hi,
I thot of letting my boy having like social interaction classes, where can I send my son to ? other than the one I know is weecare β¦ -
hi ImMeeMee & trijoy
I have soft copies of 2-page sample IEPs from ACC/AAS (2006 i think), Metta (2010) and Rainbow Centre (2003). I have more recent samples from RC and AAS but don't have time to scan & delete personal info. Anyway, there's not much difference.
Both AAS & RC rpts are from high-functioning verbal kids who were able to read and were enrolled in mainstream pri school later on.
I do have copies of ARC rpts but I think I didn't scan them cos everyone wants to get a place.
Pls email if you want a copy.
I have copies on hand to show parents so that they can make an informed choice about the quality of programme and advise them on the suitability for their child.
I usu ask parents - how long has the child been at XX ctr? I look at admission reports & prev psych rpt. I assess the child on current functional level & his ability to observe, imitate and adapt. I make recommendations to tweak their programmes after 1 mth if I'm not sure. If it's clear-cut, I show them the reports.
Trijoy - if your child is verbal, ACC is probably a good place to send your child.
Pathlight prep is quite academic but provides a good structure for pri sch set-up. The role can be done by some AEDs though. Or just pick a very BIG kindie for K2.
INTERVENTION RPT
I won't be uploading rpts on my blog as some parents may mis-interpret the info. I have to match the child's functional levels/IQ for a fair comparison. I don't have the time to sort thro everything.
To be fair, some VWOs take in lower functioning kids or kids from lower income families who have less support, so naturally the kids' development & IQ MAY appear slower and lower respectively. For new ctr, it takes a while for them to refine their programmes.
If you like me to upload your child's intervention rpt on my blog, pls delete/block out pertinent info & email me. Some info abt IQ, age & grade esp if there're other therapies, will be helpful. This will help other parents.
I don't have the time & energy to do this properly. Maybe someone can take this up. This will help in utilisation of resources for therapy. -

I hav come across therapy centres offer social interaction classes, where they put 3-4 children together and conduct some group activities.Hi,
I thot of letting my boy having like social interaction classes, where can I send my son to ? other than the one I know is weecare .......
currently we put our dd3 in an EIPIC school. the class has circle time everyday, and on different days has wet play, color play, etc. we also encourage the 3 girls to play together, which adds to the social play, and hopefully add to building dd3's scocial skills.
hope this helps. -

the challenge is always to find the right balance, and a lot of trial and error. as parents we will always be faced with the struggle of whether we are doing enough for the child.Oh my, it does sound like a lot for a 3.5yr to cope. based on what i have gathered so far after speaking to some people, speech therapy should focus on speech, ie. on the different techniques to elicit and build speech. some literacy and numeric could be incorporated if the therapist wants to build some vocabulary to build speech, but that becomes a supporting activity, and the focus remains on speech. literacy and numeric skills, functional comms, social skills should be taken up by other therapy areas such as OT, school, etc. -

i got my psychologist report from a practitioner in the private practice. she is part of a group that offers specch therapy and OT. dont need to wait for a few months in queue, but fees are not cheap. She is professional, but distant.Hello, new to this forum. I need to sent my 6yr old boy for a school readiness assessment. The school needs this report to ascertain if my son can go to mainstream or not.
I think I dont want to wait and queue at subsidized rate. EIPIC (my son's early intervention school) needs the report asap & told me the wait list for special school is long.
Anybody out there has good psychologist contact? Pls advise, thanks!
let me know if you would like her contact and I could PM you. -
