Just ask directly lah. Why doesn’t he need speech therapy??? Like how u ask us? If u have difficulty talking to them, email them.

            helplessmum3:
            Mashy,

They son my son currently need initiation n communication . Aren't these related to speech therapy ?
Helplessmum, I am no expert but this is what I have learnt along the way.

Speech therapy is a loose term that includes both speech and language therapy. Speech is usually related to oral motor abilities, like pronunciation and tone, volume of voice etc. Language is usually divided into receptive and expressive langugage. Receptive language usually refers to the ability to understand and comprehend, while expressive language usually refers to how the child expresses oneself.

The above may be an oversimplified version if you were to ask a professional, but I think it gives a gist in layman terms.

So if the therapist says your child does not need speech therapy but requires initiation and communication, it could mean that he does not need therapy to correct any oral motor deficiencies, but he needs to work on his expressive language.

How to work on expressive language? There could be a few areas.

            1. Retelling stories using 'who, where, when , why' questions.
            2. Ask predictive questions to develop critical thinking.
            3. Ask questions relating to his self and surroundings.

The above are just some pointers for reference. The therapists would be able to provide you with a lot more advice on the strategies cos it also depends on the level of your boy at this point. So do please ask them.

Hope the above helps as some form of background information.

My son is going for his formal ASD assessment tomorrow. But I am feeling calm, not nervous at all.
