I Thot abt St Andrew’s too but is too far fr my Plc, very unlikely will get a vacancy in phase 2c.

Anyway, I collected my sib’s ASD report today. Nothing unexpected from the report. And only today, I found out fr my my son’s case doc that her eldest son is also a SPED kid and she is taking break fr work to take care of the kids. She managed to get exemption fr MOE n her son is enrolled in international sch.

Thanks for the tips regarding the IQ test, at Lear it let me know how to prepare my son for the test when he turns 5. I hv one year to work on it.
And I hv decided to give up the vacant in Eden’s EIPIc n let my son continue with Leap frog. I will also enroll him in a kindy as it is more structured n the I can arrange swimming lesson for him in the afternoons. I hv asked the KkH doc for advice n she encouraged me to try. Guess I just hv to take the leap of faith.

Hope u reach a decision for your girl’s sch placement soon.

Double E, mummy knows best. If you think your child can do it, then it will.

Can I ask which doctor you are seeing at KKH?

How much is this 1.5 hrs iq assessment? Do u need to queue a long time at kk hospital before your turn come?

We paid less than $200 as subsidized patient.

From the time we saw the doctor in KKH to request for a psy assessment, to the time of psy assessment itself, it took about 2 months. But that included rejecting the first appointment which was one month apart cos the appointment was in the afternoon and we wanted a morning time slot.

As the assessment itself was based on appointment, we did not have to wait when we turned up at the assessment proper.

Mine took about 3.5hrs and we paid more than $300+ at kkh.

Zhonghua Secondary has good AED LBS support as our PM's lee son is enrolled there. Not too sure about Zhonghua Primary. But you can visit the school during their orientation to find out more or email the school to meet up or visit their premises.

Sorry to burst the bubble. My student was PM Lee's classmate in 1997 or 1998. The position of AED hasnt been created then. I understand he received individual coaching during Chinese lessons as he was exempted from taking Chinese.

My understanding is St Andrew's School has 3 AEDs - behv (ASD), SpLD (dyslexia) & counsellor (I can't remember). My student has SPD ( none of the above), so he didn't get regular help. I feel that kids with moderate ASD (ie with some degree of rigidity & tantrums ) may fare better here. The milder ones may not receive adequate attention.

Some AEDs can't handle ASD kids with difficult behaviors.

Personally, I prefer schools with 2 sessions as the AED is able to allocate time for P1 & 2s. In a single-session school, the AED has to attend to all kids (p1-6) with special needs in 1 morning.

THanks for the insight. But going forward in 2015 or 2016, all primary school will be converted to single session already. Hopefully all schools will be assigned with 2 AED LBS by then.

Yes St Andrews is one of the better mainstream school that caters for ASD kids. But distance is an issue. Also unless you get into phase 2B, else its not gurantee a space.[/quote]In my opinion, coed schools are better for our boys. Reason being that girls are more nurturing and they will keep a look out for your boy during lesson and recess time. They are like little mummies. Hahaha.

Double E, glad that you have sorted things out. Many a time we need to cut through the noise and stay focused on our priorities. There is no right or wrong answer.

BTW, since you are sometime away from school placement, perhaps you may also like to spend this year doing ground work on the potential schools that you are considering for your child, eg. attending open houses, talking to Ps or AEDs etc. Do keep options open when considering schools and take the kiasu approach - visit them all. You never know when you need to make changes to your assumptions and original decisions.

Personally, I find having done the ground work during the year when my doter was 5 yo helped me in being more informed especially when it comes to having to make decisions. By the time the child is 6 yo, timing is very tight and there would be additional pressures.

                    My two cents worth.
