i had never been to these 2 centres before.
however, all Kumon centres are standardized in terms of teaching material. Whenever there is new material to be updated to the curriculum, all centres have to do the same.
most centres will have teachers handling pre-school children, another set of teachers handling Primary school children. For kids aged 4-6, normally have to go twice a week (half hour per session). This is because young kids cannot concentrate so long. Half an hour is the most they can absorb.
however for primary school kids, they can go down once a week, esp. if they stay far away from the centre. Troublesome to come down twice a week. If they go once a week, then its 1 hr per session. But if that child really can't concentrate for 1 hr, then they can still come down for 2 sessions per week.
is your child Pre-school or primary school ? If pre-school, so long as teacher can bond with child, should be fine. Dun worry too much. Because most of the time, it's the parents who need to be with the child more, than the teacher who see the child only half an hour (short time). It is the training and the discipline that the parents have to set from young that's more important.
since that's the case, just try out 1 Term to see how.
go down visit both centres, see the P, talk to her. If can, ask her - is it possible to let your child have a trial first, with that teacher she has in mind ? from this trial, see whether your kid ok.
btw, if you want to see the contents or Kumon syllabus, can ask from the centre. If you want to see detailed contents for each level what they teach, you may also do so.
in the event that your centre doesn't allow you to see worksheets content in detail, you may go down Kumon (Balmoral centre), level 2 to take a look. You can sit down as long as you wish. Their worksheets are all bound up for English, Chinese, Maths, all levels, from the lowest 7A to the highest level. The centre staff at Balmoral plaza nice, won't chase you off, nor hurry you to browse through.This way, you have a clear idea what your kid is in for, and what you're paying $120 every month for. -
hi phtthp …thank you so much for all the details. i intend to send both my daughters 3 and 4.My niece is now 4, i think she started at 2…she 's so discipline now.Thats what i like about kumon. yes, i agree the teacher is very important they must like him/her. i will bring them to both the centres.

for Kumon Maths level 4A worksheets 71 onwards to 200 (the last page worksheet), it tests a child's understanding on the sequencing of 1 to 100.
understanding numbers 1 to 100 is important for a kindergarten child aged 4-6, before the child goes on next level to master numbers in Thousands (3 digit number), 10 Thousands (4 digit number), etc.
you may buy the 'seeds for 100 number board', or the 'seeds for 50 number board' from the Kumon centre, then let your child practise at home. ask your child arrange the seeds one by one in sequence on the board.
at same time, you may also ask child - can you tell me which number comes BEFORE 45, or which number comes AFTER 47, or which number comes BETWEEN 55 and 57 ?
... this way, it helps to introduce the concept of BEFORE, AFTER, BETWEEN.
The 'seeds for 100 number board' is slightly more expensive.
costs around $14 - but it's an imported product from Japan.
'The seeds for 50 number board' is cheaper.

THE KUMON METHOD
the Kumon method is an individualised learning method that allows each student to study at the level in which he is comfortable, regardless of age or school level.
this is accomplished by a focus on self-study that enables students to acquire not only basic academic abilities, but also concentration skills, good study habits, confidence, a sense of self-affirmation, a sense of achievement, a challenging spirit and an ability to learn by themselves.
in addition, students learn at their own pace, one small step at a time. The Kumon method is sufficiently flexible for optimal learning and allows students to retain their own dreams and goals.
Mathematics and language materials are available for study.
the learning target for mathematics is the acquisition of necessary skills for high school level mathematics.
the learning target for language is the acquisition of comprehensive ability to read and understand long passages of written materials.
the Kumon Programmes:
1. kumon Maths
kumon Maths is a comprehensive programme that develops the necessary skills to help a child progress from counting to calculus. The mathematics programme spans from level 7A to Q.
these levels extend in difficulty directly proportionate to the alphabetical listings, with 7A being the easiest and Q the most difficult.
the worksheets focus on the development of strong calculation skills and aim to assist students in advancing independently and as directly as possible to high school mathematics.

2. kumon English
the kumon English programme spans from levels 7A to L.

the subject is conducted fully in Japanese and offered only to students who meet the following criteria:-
• Native Japanese speaker, or
• One parent who is of Japanese nationality, or
• Non-Japanese who has obtained at least
JLPT 2 and above.
Singapore born citizen kids - cannot attend Kumon Japanese. -

kumon Teacher confirm that for languages - let your child listen to the CD first. As child listens, at the same time refer to textbook. Just listen, teacher said no need to underline nor circle anything on the textbook.
after finish listening to CD, then go to worksheets.
ask the child to read aloud from the worksheet(s) without CD.
if child can’t read, then underline or circle on the worksheets this time.
only languages (Chinese & English) then got CD to hear.
kumon Maths - no CD.
just practise directly on the worksheets everyday to time your child, with a stop watch or clock. -
btw, some kumon centres do not have replacement class, even if your child falls sick. But some centres do allow replacement. So can ask, before you enrol your child.
costs ?
$120 per month, per subject.
for N2 - K2 kids, need to attend twice a week.
duration is half an hour per session. But if that level involves handwriting, then longer.
since 1 month got 4 weeks, there are Total 8 lessons.
each lesson is $15 ( take $120 / 8 = 15) -
Kumon method is about daily practice. Parents can opt for once or twice a week lessons. If missed a particular scheduled lesson, you can pick up worksheets for home practice.
Actually, there wasn’t any teaching conducted during lesson time. Students sit there doing worksheets, not much difference whether do at home or do at center. Of course if encounter difficulties, can ask the helpers in the center.
