Dear yqyq
My DS in K2 has problem with addition/subtraction too. How long did your child take to "resolve" and move on? My DS will be in P1 next year. Now he is with MPM doing K2 books.
Must lessons be twice weekly with 10 worksheets for homework? How many questions are there in 1 worksheet? -

KiddyLow:
How long yr DS has been with MPM ? Maybe u can try other type of math for yr child such as kumon, CMA and etc for yr child if MPM doesn't work for yr DS. There isn't one that able to fit all children. As parent, we just hv to try different to see which suit our children the best.Dear yqyq

Thanks yqyq.
I am exploring either 3G abacus or kumon in addition to MPM. Not sure which is better. -

My DS2 (K2) started Kumon in K1 but he is still doing addition/subtraction, reason being he needs more repetitions to get the sums accurate (and within the acceptable time too).
He only attends once a week (1 hr) + 5 worksheets (excl Suns) for homework and the pages vary too.
I can only say the progress of each kid varies.
I ever compared both my kids' Kumon worksheets (of the same level), my DS2's pile is almost tripled of his elder brother's! :faint:
Kumon needs alot of discipline/patience as there is daily homework (furthermore, repetitions). Some kids/parents may not take to it. -
Hi ilovechubby
Thanks for sharing. I am also concerned about the amount of homework too. Bringing my son for diagnoistic assessment and hv better understanding of their program first.
Is yr DS attending other math enrichment concurrently? -
My 9years old son, pr 3 still in kumon since K1 he is having his current level equivalent to pr6 he does hv no problem in managing his level well he finds it so interesting he does do it on his own pace and independently

If just based on Kumon Maths alone -
Do you think kumon is sufficient to handle (p3 to p6) sg moe syllabus requirements for problem sums ?
Does yr p3 son concurrently attend another Maths enrichment else where, over and above Kumon - to handle / manage problem sums modeling part? Because I had checked Kumon Maths curriculum, it does not teach modeling. But modeling is examinable in Psle. -

Hi. My son is in P6 this year. He attended Kumon when he was very young until a few years ago. Although Kumon did not teach him modeling, he picked it up easily in school. He never had any Maths tuition or enrichment other than Kumon. His Maths has always been 90+ every year. Btw, if your child wants to score high in P6, he needs to know heuristics which will be taught by school. Modeling is in fact slows down problem solving. Your child only needs modeling to aid in the illustration of the problem. If he/she can figure out the problem sum, he/she can use other methods to solve.SohCheng:

I am also grateful that Kumon has instilled DISCIPLINE in my son such that it is easy to ask him to study everyday. He knows that practice makes perfect. With discipline, he had finished his ABRSM piano Grade 8. Of course, he also has a wonderful and strict piano teacher to teach him.
I know sometimes it is painful to do repetitive work but I am happy that I sent him to Kumon when he was young. My friends laughed at me when I sent my son at age 3 to Kumon. One of them who is a childcare teacher even criticized me. Then, when their children were at Primary 1, all of them sent their children for Maths tuition until now. For my son, he stopped Kumon when he reached P6 Maths level a few years ago.
By the way, not all Kumon is the same because it is a franchise. I have ever pulled out my son and put him in another centre because I don't like the instructor at the first centre. So, please choose a centre carefully.
This is our experience with Kumon. Each kid is different so what worked for my son may not work for your child.
