Recently my 16 year old girl told me the reason why she’s not reading is because she doesn’t have a kindle. Of course I know it is an excuse but is it really true that teenagers will only do something if it is with electronic devise? Any comments on or experience with kindle?
I don't use a Kindle but I use something similar (Kobo). There is a thread \"ereader recommendation\" which you can have a look at. Basically, Kindle is for ebooks (AZW/Mobi format) from Amazon. Other brands of ereaders will accept other formats, and NLB's ebooks are mainly in a format called EPUB.
I would check what your daughter's real reasons are - are paper books \"uncool\" and she wants a device? or she's making an excuse because she really doesn't like reading? or does she not like to lug a paper book around? or does she find it too troublesome and time-consuming to go to the library? Depending on her reasons, you can then decide whether an ereader would actually help her read more.
My reasons are the last 2, and I've been borrowing ebooks from NLB and reading on my Kobo for about 10 years now. My 2 daughters, now in the early 20s, have generally avoided ereaders, and still prefer print books. They used to read more when in school, but their reading of fiction has reduced in university due to lack of time. They still read a few books (print) during the vacations. So I don't think all young people prefer ereaders - it's the opposite for us!
