    • RE: GEP 2014 - Screening & Selection

      dotb:
I come from the school of thought that the selection is to identify those that are naturally suitable for the program, and it's not exactly an exercise to pick the 'best' (whatever 'best' means).

500 is not a quota, but a number to indicate those that meet the benchmark, so getting selected doesn't deprive others of a place if he/she meets the criteria.

It's a program to cater for kids that learn in a particular way that could be better for them. It's not 'geared' to train successful students/people, but a program to allow for a child to look at things and learn things differently. And it's not geared towards PSLE, imagine the P6 child is still doing his/her project in the month of June and some other stuffs not directly related to PSLE.

To us, it is a program that spurs the inner curiosity of the child, and provides for a learning experience he can enjoy.

These kids will do relatively well, with or without the program, as long as they are kept interested, though they may not be top scorers going through the program (or not going through the program).

Heck, with all the book reviews, readings, presentations, some of them may be inspired to be great in literature, arts, teacher etc. Who knows? The program will give them the exposure to things out of the norm from the books.

So, learning to fun in the selection test is important to know if it is suitable. Getting into the program itself is not a goal.

    • RE: GEP 2014 - Screening & Selection

DS asked what if he's thru? I told him making to round 2 is already great, like most of us in the family. None of us were 'gifted' so it's absolutely fine as it is. His conclusion? 'Well, maybe I'm the very special one who'll make it' :imanangel:

Don't know whether to laugh or cry. Nevertheless, it's good he's confident. Damage control plans shelved till early Nov 🆒

Yup. To me, if Dc has what it takes, that’s great. He’ll enjoy the journey. If don’t have, dc is better off to stay in MS & take the 2 yrs to prep for PSLE. These sort of things cannot force nor train.

No interview. Round 2 selection is the final stage.

I’m keeping chinese tutor till year end despite post psle. Asked her to discuss current affairs, book reviews, 散文 etc to keep dd gainfully engaged. CL fluency is a long term investment.

      VooVoo:

      Each class.
      Total in NYPS is 149

Total around 390 P3 pupils, in NYPS

      means (149 / 390) x 100 = 38 % cleared Round 1 test

(unless there are some who declined taking the test)

38% is a BIG number, considering nationwide only 10% clears annually!

Dd cooking telephone porridge big time. Completely no time to coach sibling. Instead infected him with her carefree ways now that I have to rein both in :nunchuk:
