Or if now I tell you that gep hinders the child chances of getting into the top schools, would you still be keen to let your child to try the program.
I am not talking about the ge kids who scored more than 85 percent in the ge exam. These kids are good in all 4 subjects and hence they will do very well in psle. I am talking about the ge kids who may have one or 2 weaker subjects that they need time to work and improve upon in order to get A* in psle.

Perhaps we should ask ourselves whether our kids need extra tuition or coaching to keep up in the ge programme. If the kids are very dependent on external help, then GE is NOT educating the kids. I am only keen on a programme or top school if I am confident that it is educating my kid, and without the need of extensive tuition or external help.

Piggylalaland had posted a very valid qn. If parents think that GEP is a ticket to a top sec school n therefore push your kids for it, then you may end up extremely disappounted in the end, plus stressed up kids.

My DD is in GEP now but from the very beginning I never knew that GEP will give my child an added advantage to any top school. I was as blur as my DD when she took those papers. I was hesitant to let her change school. I was worried she would fail certain subjects since she had zero tuition to begin with. I never thot of top schools but only about what would make her happy.

Am glad this program is making her happy now, stretching her to the limits. We don't care which sec sch she may end up in but as long as she enjoys the program I'm happy. She still has no tuition till today. Not top 3 but meeting the 70% baseline for everything. With occasional 90s. That's more than I ask for.

Just to share. Like porcupine12trade and firefly38, my DD came from nbhood sch, easy tests n exams in sch, no tuition, didn’t even know what’s MO at P3. Went for test blur like sotong. Told me during round 2 she lost her eraser and had to sit thro the entire General Ability Test praying for no mistakes. So my jaw dropped when received yellow envelope. Was worried she won’t cope.


To date she is coping well and I have not seen her happier. She may not be top 3 in class but she still has ok scores. Good enough for me, as long as she enjoys herself. (Fingers crossed still the same next 2 years)

So it is really not necessary to prep them. If they can get in naturally, they will ‘survive’ happily.

English is always tougher because the Eng syllabus in the GEP prog is really very tough. In my opinion it’s like sec sch Eng at times. Round 2 will be even tougher so pls do not prep the kids. Their time is better spent preparing for SA2.

From experience, my eldest who did not get in 2 years ago, received the 'thank you for participation' slip many days later after her classmates who were selected got the yellow envelopes. She said a couple of friends cried so she told them 'No need to cry. We are gifted in other areas, just that these areas are not tested' Haha!


This year, my #2 got selected and got the yellow envelope last Fri. But her friends too have not received the 'thank you for participation' slips. Guess every school works differently. Some try to manage the kids' ego and will quietly call the parents to come take the envelopes. In our sch, those who got selected for Round 2 were told to keep it a secret so the rest won't feel sad.

IMO, the yellow envelopes should not be given out right in front of whole class, kids have egos too. And of course those who prep for GEP, after spending so much time n money, will breakdown. The news should be made known to them in a better way.

But GEP is just a bonus, life goes on and I agree with my eldest, everyone is gifted in a different way, that's why life is beautiful

Hi. My DD got into GEP. I don’t know much about GEP. Can I join this thread?

I got news today at 3plus pm. My DD got into GEP. I am still in a state of shock cos I told her b4 round 2 that I had no expectation of her getting in. Told her to draw cartoons when in doubt. So when she told me the papers were ok I thot she was dreaming. And she has zero tuition.


So now I am still in a daze…will she be able to cope if she goes?

I'm not new to GEP cos I was the first batch to take GEP back in 1983 and had zero clue about what it entailed. According to my grandmama, who had left this world, I made it to the final round and was offered a place in some top sch, but did not go for we were too poor to afford the transportation etc. I cannot check back if she was telling the truth but I definitely know I did make it thro first or 2nd round, don't know how many rounds there were, haha! I only vaguely recall helping my teacher to flip the pgs while she was marking the round1 papers, and alas! I scored only 1 mark for some pgs!

I have a vivid memory for my childhood, and I remembered I was sweating doing those papers. I was always a top student in sch but those papers were beyond me! Luckily I was born in the 70s and so the parents didn't care much about my performAnce, heng ah! If my grandma was telling the truth and she did not allow me to go RGPS, then it is heaven sent that I went to a not as academic but still top 10 sch of my era. after that I met my husband and we are so happy tog now!

All I'm trying to say is, if your kid can make it, then congrats! If not, pls, pls do not deny them of what they may be capable of! They have a long way to go, and we are all loving parents, we know what they are capable of and what they love. both my elders make it thro round 1, at the test centers at round 2, I always tell them to
have fun, of can't do, draw your fav cartoon! Parent asked me how u prepare them, I said, I sharpen their 2B pencils

Love your kids for who they are, they only have one childhood!
