[The programme is called E W Barker Scholar Programme for those who have COP below 240. Those 240 n above will do IP route. But if they do well in sec 2 they will be transfer to IP so some boys will still go thru this DSA sport route even if they have to go for the 4 yr programme first. This programme will be v good for those real sport talents as it cater to their trainning n learning needs.

Dear mum42, could you please enlighten the readers here about the source of information that E W Barker Scholar Programme is for those DSAed Sports students who scored <240. I could not find the same information in any article linked to this programme. Thanks

I couldn't either that's why I asked if she was referring to the EW Barker Institute of Sports which is given in detail here: http://www.ri.edu.sg/main/EWBISConf

It appears to be quite different from what mum42 mentioned.
Nothing close to the articles I've read. If her source is from whichever 'center', would be good to get a clarification. Otherwise, it appears misleading.
As for DSA sports students all being in the same class, this varies from school to school. Some spread them out, some (like RI) group them all in the same class. The reason being they want to work around their competition schedules and to give them more attention knowing that they sometimes have to miss classes bec of training or competitions. I don't think the schools would focus any less academically on these students though. Maybe parents whose kids have children in DSA sports can comment.
Just a correction to the above, DSA sports students in RI are not automatically grouped into the 2 sports class. If the student qualifies entry into RI by merit, he will join the normal class based on his PSLE aggregate scores. There are some boys who excel in both sports and study. These are the rare ones.

Hi, wow, over a 1000+ pages of discussion!

Am hoping to get some advices from the experienced parents here.

For those who have used or tried using DSA via SPORTS, may I find out more? How do your kids manage to balance between the trainings and schoolwork? When do you know that your kid could have that potential? I understand that it is not easy getting in via sports for DSA and not the best may get chosen, but is there a sports that would seem to be easier than the rest?

sports DSA to those popular IP schools are for those considered as national team / age group sportsmen/women, so no problem spotting them ..... they always top the competition at national level for their age group
If you are considering to use sports to apply for DSA, do make sure that you child is comfortable with the academic demand of the school you are applying to. It is not easy to balance sports at a competitive level with studies at a punishing pace. Of course, there are sports people who are equally good with both, though rare. The rare ones are really precious to the IP schools who value and recognise sports.

Bear in mind, sports DSA is not easy at all. Each school will only take in a few for team sports and 1-2 for individual sports. Then there is significant risk that the same 1-2 individual will apply to a few schools and nab the CO in these schools, causing the rest to be rejected. So the CO offered by the few schools are really going to the same individuals. This is a very real risk!
Hi All,

Rarely here but having gone through the discussion and postings here, i wish to share my views:
I feel that mainstream students, especially those who are strong in academics are gradually losing their lustre in the DSA exercise. I understand there is a category for students who excel in SMOP,NMOS and such and also another category for those who use their top subjects to apply under academic. However, i feel there is very slim chance of getting into the desired top IP schools under the above categories.
It is a known fact that these schools prefer Geppers who also sweep most of the SMOP, NMOS top awards. So how do you think they will rank a mainstreamer who does well in the same cat? Obviously behind a gepper.

As for those who apply under academic using their top subject, don’t you think the schools could just wait for the release of the PSLE results and do the sorting then to admit the student?

It is apparent that most congratulatory messages here are for the parents with Geppers. I share their joy. But I also empathise with those whose applications have failed. Do not be despair though, the real exam is PSLE, encourage your child on to do well. Anyway, PSLE is just one of the many exams in one’s journey.

I feel that parents must identify what type of students the IP schools are seeking before you subject the child and yourselves to this grueling DSA exercise. If the selection is solely based on academics, then I feel the schools will not take the trouble to do this exercise…must as well wait for PSLE results as I have said earlier.
For the P5 paper, 4lessStress mentioned there were many application questions, but are these questions good, thought-provoking questions (set aside the quality of teachers or teaching)? Is it across the board that P5 did badly for science?
I was informed that the highest mark for P5 entire standard is 81. Don't you think that is low? I would also like to know what is the standard average for this subject. Will know by next week and post it here.

I've always though that getting into Pei Hwa was like 'WOW' until

That's why hubby asked me want to transfer my younger boy out or not?

I know of parents who have transferred their children or are considering transfers for their children. But this is not a good option after P3. If the PHPPS staff and management have \"infiltrated\" this website (which I believe they have), I hope that they know the sentiments out there and do something good about it. Still keeping my fingers crossed.....

      Dear P5 Parents,

My son came back with a disastrous result for his science SA1. 64/100.
I am wondering what has gone wrong. Was the paper too tough? I’ve seen the papers and there were many application questions. I am wondering if the students are taught how to tackle such questions in class.
Somehow, I feel that the teaching and the testing are not in sync.
My child is already P5 and it is definitely demoralising to get results like this when he has put in the effort.
P5 results are taken into consideration for DSA application. Sad to say, his SA1 results is no use now.
