RE: NO tuition success stories to share?
All 3 of my kids don’t have tuition as I don’t believe in sending kids all over Singapore to tire them. The assessments books that I bought for them to do n their homework are good enough. I believe firmly in time management n discipline.
My 14yr old dd is in cedar sec n my two sons are in Gep. I believe it’s also their own effort to want to excel. -
RE: Pei Chun Public
My DD was in VB school team n her form teacher at P4 told us that evenif she has VB, as long as she has good results, she will go to P5A. and she did. in the end, she did not use VB for DSA . i don’t believe in depending on sports to gain sec school. no matter what n whether we like it or not, academics is still king. My girl is now in cedar n still playing VB in school team. i think if children are doing the sports that they like, we can use it as the carrot to further motivate them.
I know of parents withdrawing their kids from niche cca n not be penalized. as u know, it is not compulsory to hv a cca in pcps. my DS2 is not taking any cca now. he is just not interested in anything.

Dear bridesep
Yes, 5A is the top class in PCPS. I think it still remains the same till this day. Naturally you will also see a lot of prefects from this class.
P3H and P3G are the sports classes. P3H is for table tennis and volleyball, during my DD’s time. Eventhough your academic results are good, as long as you have a niche CCA, you are in sports class. During her time, P3E was the top classes. But effective from year 2012, they don’t post students to P3 classes according to academics. They mix students of different levels of academics together in the same class. So you can’t tell where all the clever students are, in short, they are spread throughout all the P3 classes. But if you want to know who they are, very easy. The top 3 students of each class will be your top students.
If your child is in the school sports team, your chances to gain entry to a good sec school thru DSA is quite high. But you must check whether that secondary school has the CCA in the first place. Eg, Cedar Girls has a very strong volleyball team, thus they take in a lot of PCPS volleyball school team girls every year. If I am not wrong, this year they are taking 6 PCPS volleyball girls thru DSA to start their Sec 1 year next year. But Raffles Instuition does not have volleybal as its CCA, so it would be a waste of your kids’ time if you want to use this for DSA. Having said this, we should leave it to the kids to do the sports they like and not because of DSA.

RE: GEP 2012 - Screening & Selection
My 1st son is in GEP P5 this year. He was one of the top students in his school but once he went into GEP, he realised that they were many more cleverer boys than him. He takes it as healthy competition, which is what I want. Some kids just needs to be challenged intellectually and academically.
In my opinion, GEP offers much more opportunities for him. The curriculum especially English and Maths are very challenging. Standards are quite high but he enjoys it. Although Science topics are the same but the coverage is much more interesting and they do more process thinking, which I think will help in PSLE or even when they are in secondary school. They have more outings which stimulates their mind rather than just "sight seeing" trips.
My sons has 3 friends who have dropped out of GEP and went back into main stream. I just think that it needs a very unique boy or girl to enjoy GEP. Yes, it has its priviledges, it’s prestigous… but if your kid cannot take it, don’t force them. I have seen boys who cry during the 1st 2 months in P4 but they seemed to have forgotted that tough period of life. They adopt the attitude, "if you can’t beat them, join them"
Relax parents, let your child enjoy his childhood and let him cope on his own.

RE: Pei Chun Public
Hi Yellowbelt
I am trying to recall from memory as my DD is already Sec 2 now. Like what Yellowbelt said, volleyball training for school team members will step up after 2nd term in P3. Remembered her going for extra training on Sat afternoon (including 1 afternoon training on weekday).
I don’t send my kid for tuition, so it did not affect the time she spent on studying. But definitely she felt more tired as they trained real hard. The girls’ team are always the top three for zone and national championship, so the tough training.
My DD was in P4H (Sports class) but in P5A and not P5H eventhough she is in the school team. They will stream you according to academics from P5 onwards. So there were times when she had to miss lessons and did lots of catch up when she went for competitions. She was the only volleyball player in her class, so a lot depended on her own to seek for help. Competiton starts from Feb and last til April (if you get into National).
As long as your child knows how to juggle between sports and studies, I am sure she will like it.

RE: Pei Chun Public
But from p5 onwards, students are streamed according to academic results. thus p5a will be the best class. even if u hv cca , u are still in P5a and not sports class.

RE: Pei Chun Public
Actually it’s the volleyball coach that will decide whether your child will be selected for volleyball as a CCA. Anyway, the selection should have been completed by now and if I remember correctly, you will receive a letter from the school whether he/she is selected or not, maybe in Oct.
You may want to contact the teacher directly to find out whether your child is already selected to take volleyball.
