    • RE: special Needs- to declare or not declare?

      mum02:
My kid is mildly ADHD i think.

I told the teachers of my suspicion so that they know how to handle him.
But I did not get it checked.
All the symptoms are pointing towards ADHD.
For my son's case, we thought he is ADHD, but he was diagnosed as ASD.

    • RE: School Readiness Assessment

      lih_rabbit:
Hi, I would like to know, if my child is already accepted in the school but the assessment which is done after the P1 registration exercise highlighted that it's best for him to defer for a year. Does that mean we get to keep the place in that school till the following year or we still have to go through the registration process again? Appreciate your advice. Thanks.

That's what happened to me. My son got a place in his sister's school for 2009 intake (in May 08) but Pathlight School also offered a place to him in (Oct 08). As he still couldn't read independently at that time with some behavioural issues, we thot he wasn't ready for mainstream but we also din know which sch to choose. In Nov 08, I paid $100 for a edu psychologist in planet to assses his readlness in P1, report turned out to be \"not ready\".
I immediately told the mainstream sch that he will go pathlight for his prep P1 class by filling up a form, the sch then send this form to MOE. Think I did register again in May 09 thru' a form brought home by my daughter. I am not sure.

you are lucky bec yr child turns out ok in mainstream.

but not every speech delay child is like yours. Some still struggling painfully in primary school.
if can, wiser to seek early intervention if possible.
yes I agree I m lucky as in I can stay home to guide him, handle or resolve issues/complaints from teachers almost immediately, but my son suffered a lot due to the late diagnosis. KKH advised us to seek integrated childcare or kindi, no need to send to special schs.. We tried integrated childcare (we only hv 1 in my area), long waiting list. we sent him to a nearly church kindi, the principal said he welcome him and can handle him but most of the time he was isolated in a corner playing toys, till a staff in church told me this is not the place for him.. I hv a hard time getting a kindi for him to start his K1.
I found the right place for him eventually. This time, i transfered my girl (1 yr older) to look after him.

As for private intervention, we sign him up for revamp @ kidzgrow and planet for his socials skills, he attended 2 schs (1 special + 1 normal kindi) daily-7hrs in sch, 3-4 hrs on sch bus. He will scream and shout every morn and beg us not to send him to special sch. most of the time, I will cry with him but still no choice die die must force him to go as time is running out. We have 2 years to make things right. We stop seeing KKH doc after diagnosis..

Due to late diagnosis ==> late intervention, I defer his P1 in pathlight prep class.

This is how my son spent his childhood. kind of sad right..

pathlight school only accept autistic kids, but not speech delay or speech disorder ?

Pathlight conduct assessments in group of 8 (my son's time) for the Prep P1 applicants and those who r selected must hv a minimum level of speech, good sitting, able to follow instructions etc..think they were given some worksheets to do too. before that, an updated IQ report (as at 4.5yo) must be submitted way before the assessment. The IQ score shld be around 70 to 90 (if i remembered correctly).

My son's prep classmates are all verbal.

My son has just been given a preliminary assessment of high functioning autism by kkh. Will have to do more tests to confirm.

Although he had delayed speech, he's very bright. He can read very well and very advanced in his science knowledge. In fact he learnt by himself through self reading. I didn't even know many stuff that he knew.
btw, how old is he now? pathlight has many high functioning autistic children with just behaviour issues.. Is very sayang for such kids to stay in special schs..But if put in mainstream, they will face problems too..

Forgot to mention that my girl can't trace on dotted line. More than 50% of the time her line will go out. She can't use scissors to cut too.

From this KKH incident, I learn this: cheap
Thing comes at the expense of quality or time.
Our special needs just need more time and guidance. for my son, he was interested in alphabets, so he knew all the alphabets at 1+, he can spell words at 2, but he has no speech. He couldn't answer a simple question like \"what did u eat in sch?\" at 4.5yo. He can understand everything we say or ask, but just no speech.

At 5, he started to speak in short sentences but still couldn't read, at 6yo he started reading.. Now at 9yo, he is doing just fine in a mainstream sap sch.

What I am trying to say is not to worry too much, sometimes our kids will improve over time. For my case, KKH din help him at all, no OT, no following up from the doc.. no referrals to ARC/Pathlight etc.. we applied the schools ourselves.

      Hi all

I am very new here. My son is going 3 years old next month. Both DH and myself are very concerned about his speech. At this age, he is unable to speak in sentence. He can merely say words like \"mummy, daddy, porpor, gonggong, chercher, gorgor, ah yee, teacher\", some fruits like \"apple, banana, grapes, pear\", other things like \"bag, comb, tree, car, boy, girl, duck\"

He does try to speak double or triple syllabus like \"strawberry, elephant\" but the pronounciation wasn't there.

At the same time, he also throws tantrums. I brought him to KK to review his development issues as I am really worried that he might be autistic.

The KK doc assured me that he is not autistic, just slow in speech as in his early years he is taken care by maid and mil who doesn't speak much to him. We have an appointment in September in Ministry of Health to train us (parents) how to teach kids with speech problem.

He is now in full day child care since Jan this year. Although teacher said that he is picking up words now, I am still very worried that he will be lag behind and he lose confidence when he is with his peers where others could speak well and he could not.

I have been looking around for enrichment courses. I am not sure whether courses in \"I can read\", L central or Morris Allen as these courses seems to be meant for kids that can speak.

Can mummies here be kind enough to suggest what kind of enrichment course will benefit him? I am staying in Punggol. I am also quite careful with the type of course as it didn't come cheap.

      Thanks!
KKH also said that my son is not autistic but just slow from age 2yo, at 4.5yo, we urged the doc in KKH to get him assessed and he was diagnosed as mildly autistic..I was so disappointed with KKH, quite a bit of time wasted for not able to start his early intervention at 2yo. I shld hv seek a 2nd opinion from another private doc back then.

How about Ichiban Nurtureland @ Choa Chu Kang, I visited this center, she does provide individual therapy in between the class session. But I don't know whether she is a right one for my autistic boy or not?

to me, kindi is a place for social skills and academic stuffs, behaviour, attention span, auditory processing etc... need to engage special needs teachers or therapists (1 to 1). every asd kid is unique..
