My daughters are in P2 and P5. We are really glad that they are able to study in CHIJ Katong Primary. Actually, we had gotten a place in another very popular school in the East due to parent as ex-student. However, my wife and I took the risk, gave up the place to ballot for CHIJ Katong. Thankfully our girl got in. Our main consideration then was that the school is very strong in the English Language and especially for our girls, we hope that they will grow up to be fluent and confident communicators. We think being in an all girls environment would be helpful as the girls will be less shy to speak up.
Now that my children have been in the school for a number of years, I feel compelled to share with other parents how I find the school.
In P2 my elder one came home one day and I asked her what her favourite subject in school was. (I thought her answer would be PE / Art or English). To my pleasant surprise, she told me that she enjoyed the Chinese lessons very much. This was unexpected especially when you think of CHIJ Katong being very strong in English (Which is true.) I am very appreciative that her Chinese Teacher went the extra mile to make Chinese Language very interesting and my daughter looked forward to attending Chinese lessons everyday.
As you know, many students would find Math problem-solving at P5 rather challenging. My daughter was a language person from my observation and was not too keen in Math. However, this year, out of sudden, she developed a liking for Math. She also credited this new found interest to her Math teacher.
There are other examples, but I just want to share that I really appreciate the hard work and dedication of the teachers in CHIJ Katong. They made the difference in my daughters education by making lessons interesting and motivating the children to like the subjects.
So by now, I have gotten more than I have asked for initially. However, what I am more impressed is how my children try to put the values they learnt in school into practice. The would constantly mention about the school vision "From girls to women of grace and substance." That’s how I got to know about it. As a parent, I am really happy that there are ample opportunities for my girls to develop holistically.
Well, to cut the long story short, if you are a parent of girls, this is one of the best schools.
We should give credit where it is due.
Hope this helps.
