    • RE: Preparing for 2014 PSLE Math

Dear parents, for those of you who pm me, thank you for your kind words.

I have decided to stop sharing the resources for several reasons.

      1. I understand that kiasuparents may not permit sharing of resources in this section and may move it to another section. It is never my intention to sell my materials here.
I came to this conclusion because it moved my thread of sharing P5 materials to another section.

      2. I am sharing these materials which I use for my own students. Hence, I cannot and will not make the links permanent. If I make them permanent, anyone can access them anytime and make use of them other than to use them for their personal use.

Hope you can understand why this thread is discontinued. Thank you for your support.

    • RE: Single friend/s who teach you how to raise your kids

I totally agree that parenting a child is different from teaching a class of children.

For example, you have teachers whose children do badly in their own studies. Not trying to mock anyone, but just stating some real life examples. Teaching your own kids is different from teaching other kids. That’s why many parents prefer to outsource tutoring to other people.

Similarly, many parents see things based on their limited experience of their own children, while experienced teachers have seen many children over the years.

So what works best is to know the experiences and background of the person before deciding to take his/her advice with a pinch or a tub of salt.

I am very amused by this thread. We all know that advices are free and come easily from anyone. LOL.

Thing is, people will only give you advices freely and out of generosity if you give them permission to do so. So first, we have to stop giving free advices and ask for free advices.

I think it’s better to charge consultation fees. LOL.

    • RE: Change in PSLE Maths syllabus in 2014???

That’s very true. That’s why how schools set their exam papers makes a huge difference.

PSLE paper caters to the whole cohort in the nation. There is a very wide spectrum indeed.

    • RE: Change in PSLE Maths syllabus in 2014???

Math is math, and when it comes to syllabus changes, there is often little change in terms of content. After all, what more can we add or take away, except to shufffle some minor topics? The main topics like whole numbers, fractions, percentage and ratio will always be there.

MOE does hope to change the way math is being taught.

Another way MOE makes changes is to control the level of difficulty through the branch SEAB that sets the PSLE paper and adjust the weightage of various topics.

But what I have found over the years is that no matter how tough or easy the paper is, children who are well prepared will always do well. Children who are not well prepared, will still not do well, even when the paper is easy.

    • RE: GEP and IQ

Academic giftedness is only that. Nothing more. It does not guarantee success in other areas or in life.

Many parents share stories of how some kids are gifted but bored in school. Some of them may eventually go to GEP. But the point is how these kids deal with boredom. Kids who cannot deal with boredom constructively will grow up to become adults who cannot deal with boredom, gifted or no gifted.

Everything boils down to attitudes and parents play a huge part in shaping them. I have taught many GEP kids before and they are very bright and adorable. They really have a mind of their own and are not afraid to speak their mind. They are a pleasure to teach. It’s clear to me that their parents have brought them up well.

    • RE: GEP and IQ

To me GEP is about if you have it, you nurture it. There is a certain advantage in putting a child in GEP, if she has what it takes. First, you have more resources in the education system dedicated to educating the child. Second, the academic road is somehow smoother. The GEP label helps somehow.

I once asked one of my GEP students to ask her teacher how GEPPers do traditionally in PSLE. She came back with the report that they have had people who got B in PSLE math so far. While most do get A*, you also have some who get A or B.

If you look at the purported top scores for this year’s PSLE, you would realize that there is not much to separate the top scores of GEP and non-GEP schools.

Investigative Task for Unit 3 Algebra

One useful way to help children appreciate algebra is the use of Function Machines or the Input-Output Machines. They are easily available online.
