Drama Mama,
Hi! Thanks.
I do want to hire a driver, or two.. so that it is easier to cover more areas. Just that I cannot decide on whom to hire (I have got a few quotations. But they are not the highly popular drivers - who are already booked by now -so I am feeling uncertain about committing.. :scratchhead: )

Hi Pen88n
I just booked my train tickets yesterday morning. Do read the blog post posted by raisintan first. It is very helpful. I actually kept the blog post open in a separate window as I went about booking the train tickets (for reference). It is advisable to collect the tickets when you reach taipei, i.e. don’t wait till the actual day (to collect 30 min in advance) in case you reach the station late and they release your tickets for sale. -

Hi Caroline3sg,
Thanks so much for the detailed sharing. I am sorry to hear abt the bad experience. I would expect the driver to be more accomodating as well as open in discussing the route and options. To leave you all in the gold ecological park while not answering your phone calls is not acceptable! I think I will also switch to someone else. I really appreciate your sharing. -

Hi caroline3sg
Thanks for your review and comments. I am appalled at what you have experienced with Mr Xu. That’s not very pleasant. I think Meeky covers Shifen right? And I would expect Mr Xu to do the same too.
Did he say why he did not want to go there? Did you, at the start of the day tour, discuss with him the places to cover? I have also booked him and what you have shared is making me think twice.
I appreciate your advice. Thanks. -

Similar experience here... the reception was not that clear but was still ok. He was busy (perhaps driving), so he asked if he could call me back later. And he didThanks Anx
When I called Mr Xu, there were a lot of noise disturbance, so couldn't talk long on places to visit & no. of hours. I told him I am staying at YMCA and he asked for my HP no. & no. of people, and to call him when I reached TPE to make sure I arrived, that's all.The itinerary wise, i think we need not worry, cos those places are pretty 'standard'. However, if you have a particular place you want to go, I would suggest you to ask him at the start of the trip. FYI I also just briefly mentioned jiufen, jinguashi areas to him (cos I was conscious of the fact that he was the one calling me back and paying for the long distance call, so I'd better not take too long). He also asked me to call him when I reach tw, so that we can arrange what time to meet at the hotel on the day of day trip.
Have a great trip with your girl! -

Mr Xu told me 10-12h. I gathered that's fine. Same no. of hours as Mr Meeky Yang's, I think. Same rate as yours. He sounded friendly.blessed homemaker, anx
I booked Meeky's friend, Mr Xu. Charging NT3000. He is also 12 hr? -

Hi, I could not hire Mr Meeky too cos he's fully booked for Dec. I engaged his friend, Mr Xu. Maybe you can try calling him?Hi Blessedhomemaker, and Carolinesg
I am unable to book Meeky as he said he is fully booked!
I managed to contact another cabbie mentioned in another forum and he quoted TWT 3,500 for 8-9 hours. Seems a bit higher than the market rate? i tot it was TWT 3000.
Another question - did any cabbie asked for payment of deposit? Cos my cabbie/tour guide from Hualien asked for 30% deposit in advance...I tot it was quite unusual cos it is to an individual. -

Hi Godiva,
I know - which was why I'm so surprised when the guide/cabbie I intend to engage ask for a 30% deposit for my 1 1/2 day tour. The total deposit is $100, not a lot but also not negligible. I have been reading tripadvisor and have never come across cabbie asking for deposit. What if he doesn't turn up? It is not like the minsu which is located at a place.Blessed Homemaker:
I think Meeky's rate is the cheapest so far. The rest I've enquired is NT4000 or more for 8 hours.
I've enquired with a few Hualien drivers but no one indicated deposit needed, not even the famous Mr Lu.
I wonder if the winds of change are blowing.
i tried to book tiffany chang for my dec day trip at taroko. she will not be free, so i booked her husband instead. also paid a 30% deposit. -
