RE: Learning Point - Discussion
Sweetbaby456:
I agree 200%.
I agree. LP standard is very high. I see that in my son's English and Maths worksheets that he brings back (especially of the Maths worksheets where they are lots of tricky questions, high order thinking questions). It is true that you need a good foundation before you enrol in LP.Ran1977:
Quite amused to see some postings singing praises fm enthusiastic parents who do not even hv kids with lp. That made me wants to share my views too.
Both my dc started with RFS at K1 and eventually added Maths and science with lp. Withdrew dd from all classes mid P4. Ds is in P3. Have withdrawn him from Maths and stopping science after this term. Will be continuing with English. To cut a long story short, these are my views of lp
- as with all schools & enrichment centres, there will always be some fantastic teachers and some not so fantastic ones. Both dc has had their shares of teachers they adore to teachers they do not like thru the yrs there. I would prefer if teachers can stay with kids as they progress so they know the strengths & weaknesses of their students
- find the materials for eng & Maths good. Science materials standard too high. (My opinion) My dc are always failing their papers at lp even though science is one of dd strongest subject.
- over the more than 5 yrs that dc were there, I think the course fees increased like thrice and I think they r increasing it again next yr. At that price, I wud rather pay the same for ex/existing/retired teachers. (Managed to find teachers for my dd who fall into the said categories)
- reason why my ds in continuing with eng: a case where same teacher followed thru since p2 who is very encouraging and dedicated. Hv confirmed that she will be continuing with the same class next yr. Ds looks forward to her classes and that is important to me
To conclude- lp is overall quite a good enrichment centre. BUT a good and highly rated enrichment centre may not be the best for your child. As lp is an enrichment centre, their materials are pitched at a higher standard. May not be suitable for kids whose foundation is not there yet. Finding the right tutor / centre needs some trial & error sometimes.
LP standard is very high.
Thus, parents should carefully consider before signing up for any of their subjects - be it English, Maths or Science. Some kids cannot take the pressure and may break down during the lessons if they cannot cope with the high standard (my friend's son told me that his friend student cried during the Maths LP lessons as he didn't know how to do the questions). :yikes:
Thus, parents - a piece of advice before jumping in and paying so m
uch for your kids lessons at LP-please analyse your kid first and their personality. If you think that they cannot perform under a pressure cooker environment (what LP is) - please please don't put your child in LP.
It is better not to follow the crowd (be it for 1 term, 2 terms or even 1 year) as a child's self esteem and self confidence once broken and shattered is very, very difficult to repair and mend. You yourself know your child the best. :imdrowning:
:goodpost:
I agree-a friend who used to work as a teacher in LP told me that there was this Indian boy who used to cry at a few of her Maths P1 LP classes as he idn't know how how to do the questions when the teacher asked them to attempt on their own first. Apparently, his friend in the same class could do the same questions easily.
The teacher did talk to the mum on it n after 1 or 2 terms the boy left.
Thus parents do understand n talk to your child as not all children are the same. Like what is said-pressure cooker environment works for some n not for other kids. In the above true LP story, if the mum had known about the son n her character as well as seen the sample LP worksheets that the Admin has, she would have known that LP is not for him from the start.
And its a quite known fact that LP standard very high not only for Maths but also English.
A good suggestion given by a parent is to go to another centre first n try to build up the child's foundation before giving LP a shot. By building up the foundation, the child will have no problem at LP be it for English, Maths or Science (of course this is just a suggestion so that the child would not be too overwhelmed once he/she comes in to LP [especially if not from the LP modules from the start) :scratchhead: -

Am looking for a centre for my child that does a mix of both direct questions + those heuristics skills questions.
Did try PSLE Maths but my child found too easy! -

oh, that's means chances for my son is low... next year he will be K2, emm, may i know what they will test? my son only know very simple grammar, he can read, but not so well...
Hi, what I heard is that more classes are being opened for next year due to the heavy demand of LP English, Maths n Science. You may want to check with the Admins of LP on it
My relatives said best to get in LP earlier as for each stage, the placement tests gets harder n harder.. -

Mama_ambitious:
I think you are right that the fit depends on the child.Sorry I mean to get feedback!
Also like to add, this is my personal opinion and also each kid is different so please read in that perspective! To avoid any hard feelings!
I have 2 friends who went to this centre; I believe that k2 level which my friends tell me - this centre is perfect in that its is more manipulative based where learning is made fun and enjoyable while learning concepts for Maths.
One friend left at K2 as she turned into SAHM and could coach her DS herself. The other continued at P1 with this centre..unfortunately, she told me that at P1 her son didn't do well in school as the work in school for Maths now focuses on more Thinking Skills and not just straight forward questions (in fact I think that is true for all Primary School Maths starting with P1s).
Her DS could ace the ccentre questions and test but in school stumble onto the higher level Thinking questions. :scared:
Then she moved to another centre where it was a mix of both (straight forward and higher level thinking/heuristic questions) and her son did extremely well..in fact the teacher asked my friend \"What is your secret for making C**** do so well?\"
So I think like what mama_ambitious said, depends on the fit. Personally (no offence to all), based on my research; I believe that this centre is for the kindergarteners (k2) and even P1s to a certain extent (maybe if your child is of average ability) but maybe in P2s onwards you should focus on other centres... -

May you clear the placement test and get a spot in Learning Point..
If you don't, don't be disappointed-I think you can try again in 6months to 1 years time:)
