Hihi, that is so nice of you..I don't have any Sci/Math qns to ask..but would like to check how do you find the Sci for Secondary? I guess you are a parent and been studying together with your kiddo?

I m at a juncture thinking if I should let my kid continue to study on her own or go for tuition..I find tuition may help but there is a resistance from kiddo. I been away from my Sec Sci for a long long time.

I wonder what benefits we will get from Science tuition as in is there any technique/skills/special methods to remember etc, that we could get from tutors in tackling the exam qns? Or we can self study the Science subjects?
Hi I think what splits tutoring to this types of forum is that
      Tutoring
      A) It is taught by a person who majors in something or is fond with a particular subject the most and is confident of teaching.

      This forum
      A) Different people with different thoughts can be spread around and tutors who actually came across this forum can contribute as well.

      -Back to the question-
Science consists of knowing the facts. In Singapore there are 3 main sections: section A: MCQ (easy to score and know by facts), section B (short structured, easy to score if knows well of topic and hard to score if did not pay attention, section C, long structured, harder to score due to the fact that there is no format in answering long structured questions, easy to score if you know deeply into the topic and know how to craft your sentences.

Basically, science -> facts + understanding.

I would recommend your kiddo to revise strangely that no one will understand. For me long time ago in university I took H2 Chemistry you will learn organic chemistry and how to structure polygons into a format. There was one chemical bond structure I forgot but it looked like a bat to me. I started revising based on animals but to others it does nit look like a bat.
Or another example. Learning Polygons I use the method Q-Phone (QPHHOND) Quadilateral, Pentagon, Hexagon, Heptagon, Octagon etc...
Or Mitosis you know IP man? I structure it to be ITMAT+C Interphase, telophase etc...

Sometimes what you structure to help you remember can be very strange because it works for you but not to others and it is totally okay. Be creative! Imagination will spark like wildfires!

That is all that concludes. I hope that you can spend some time with your kiddo and give him some tips! I am sure you are going to be the best mom your kiddo could ever want! 🙂

I agree with floppy. It is not easy to say, or to hear, but the hard truth is that a student who missed the mark to enter Express is not likely to do well enough overall to get good enough A level grades to get into a choice course like Medicine. Yes, there are the rare and unique cases of students who were in ITE and later got a place in Medicine, but they are featured in the news because they are so rare. And often, they are the students who had some issues in their younger days and hence didn't study hard, or were distracted, not students who had been diligent all along.

The other consideration is that a student with poor A levels has very few avenues to proceed, and not much scope to get jobs. It's much better to have a diploma, and if your son goes that route and doesn't make it to university, that way he has a better chance of getting a job.
You know how hard it was for my kid. He was originally from NT (Lack of Motivation) and he worked hard to scoring nearly to Express of course it isn't good but for the sake of his Art talent, enrolled him to XXXX school. I think that people like him with progressive motivation and dedication will do well. He doesn't breakdown ever I think that his stress capacity is much bigger than some kiddos. Every kid has the right to go to their desired course it is a matter of their behaviour towards studying. If a person could not handle even the slightest stress does not fit for medicine for example. Hard nor easy it depends on the kiddo's behaviour. Psychologically, it does not mean that a N(A) kid is slower than Express kid means his ability to do things is moderate. There is a thing called behavioural progression. Motivation goes time to time it either increase or decrease. Even some Express kiddos got all D's because lack of motivation <- not all but some.

She therefore wants to transfer to another school which offers A Math to NA students (of course on top of E Math).

I’d say that’s the best way to fight for A Math O level path, which can lead to H2 Math at A levels, which then opens the doors to Medicine (and also Engineering, if he changes his mind at that point).

If don’t grab this chance now, effectively the doors are all pretty much shut in his face, just becos the stupid school refuses to provide A Math option. Maybe staff shortage hah.
I would say very few schools are like this plus asked the school year head. From that message on I am so angry at the school and why did I blindlessly made my son choose that school. Year head quote: \"Students cannot take the N level examination as both a private and school candidate.\" like what is this school thinking I think they only allow JC course for students to be in the Arts. I am still so frustrated and angry I nearly wanted to storm to the school and mindlessly shout at them. Its like a jail for normal academic students in that school. I do not want to hold down this schools reputation so I am not putting the name of the school but for the sake of parents living near Yishun it's around there.[/quote]
If that was the law of MOE then I am not upset. What I can say is that 'Do better XXXX if you can raise a child right then prove it.'

Actually. If a student is sitting for NA Additional Mathematics at N level and he/she does well enough. Does he/she qualified to take O level Additional Mathematics at secondary 5?

Realistically if going into express is an issue, I wouldn’t think about JC. Try the poly route.
I have decided as a mother to let my kid transfer school. Do not worry my kid wants to transfer at the first place. I think that doing so will allow better combination choices for him. Decided to go with Yishun Secondary School. Good nor bad school I don't care as long as my kid is doing well and is happy why not?

Anyways. Son has been offered Express Math and Science. Form teacher says it would benefit him in PFP but as you guys may know he wants to go JC. Should he take Express Math and Science and what benefit it gives in JC as an SBB student?
