• RE: O Level Child: At my Wits end, need advise

      Hi,

Any parents here recently faced similar issues of your O' Level child losing motivation in studies? If you managed to improve the situation, can you share some tips and advice pls?

We've tried the hard and soft approaches, nothing really works. Daughter did very badly for Sec 3 and almost got retained. 1 month of school holiday has passed and she spends most of her time online playing games, watching videos and chatting on forums with people she doesn't know in person.

She is very sure of taking the A Level route and has made up her mind on which course to take in University. However, at the rate that she is performing, i don't think she qualifies for any JC 😢

My DD had consistently performed well and top her class. When we were choosing her sec sch, the first 3 were IPs, next 3 SAPs. I was confident that she could score at least 250+. When the results were released, I was devastated. She scored only 235. I was in a state of shock and disappointment. My ego was humbled by the result. These few days I’ve come to terms with this reality. I’ve accepted her limitations. She is what she is. This is a valuable lesson that I learned. I hope I can share.

I can totally feel your pain jyeo1963 :hugs:

We are exactly in the same situation as you 😢 DD has consistently been in the top classes in a popular primary school (one of those in the past year exam papers school list). We had also expected her to score 25X but she ended up with 23X (she hit 26X in P6 exam). It was totally shocking and unexpected. DD also didn't expect it too cos she didn't find the PSLE papers any difficult compared to school exams.

It was really tough coming to terms with it the 1st few days, especially so when we don't get to see the papers and have no clue what went wrong...

With our support and assurance, DD recovered pretty quickly but I seriously have phobia now thinking about her O 'Levels 😢

    • RE: GEP 2011 - Screening & Selection

My fren called both Nan Hua and Henry Park pertaining to admission of her P1 kid next year. HPPS explained that cos they are a full-govt school, they have to follow MOE's allocated intake strictly. For govt-aided schools like NYPS and NHPS, they have the flexibility to absorb extra students.

However, when she called NHPS, the admin manager told her they can't just absorb additional students cos they have to \"answer to MOE\". This is so weird..

I was just told nyps' 2011 P1 classes have >30 students in each class. Heard the principal was very kind to take in all the unsuccessful PVs last year. Not sure if it's the same practice this year. I guess the school has some flexibility as to whether to take in extra students.

I would also think siblings of existing GEPpers should be given priority, for the family's logistics convenience
I was told depend on availability. If that year's cohort is full, it is full. There isn't much the school can do. Although I believe there is probably some sort of 'priority' in the event a vacancy arises. Then again, which GEPer sibling is the school going to prioritise if demand exceed supply? Luck plays a part too, I guess

Yes, many NYPS's P1 classes will have more than 30 students next year, with one class with 33 students. However, the school does not guarantee a place for younger siblings of GEPpers as there is always a long waiting list for all levels.
Thanks! No priority? I wonder if other GEP schools will have stronger enthusiasm in absorbing the younger siblings of GEPpers

      Hi mummies,

Asking on behalf of a fren.. For those who registered GEP with Nan Hua and has a younger child going p1 next year, what's the school's stand on this? Put on waitlist or the Principal will absorb them? Fren told me that there are a number of unsuccessful PVs already on the waitlist.

On waiting list...........can be 1 year or 2 depend on vacancy.....no fix dateline.....

Can I just ask why her insurance doesn't cover it. I will be honest & say that I never read the small print of ours, I just looked at the headline total coverage so you've got me worried.

Personally I would probably do it just in case it is something serious. You may not be able to fund long-term treatment if it is but at least you could send her back with a proper diagnosis. I would worry if she just went home that she wouldn't do anything about it.
Insurance only covers accidents and hospital stay. For gastroscopy, no hospitalisation is required, so not covered 😢

      Hi,

      Need some advice here...

My maid has been with me for coming to 4 years and she's good. She has frequent gastrics pain which we brought her to the doc. During her latest visit, the doc suggested for her to do a gastroscopy.

The procedure and treatment is not going to be cheap.. Anyone in a similar situation? How much did it cost u?

Did you ask the doctor rough estimation of cost? You should also check if the insurance you bought cover this first before deciding whether to go ahead or not.

It's probably going to cost $1k all in. Insurance doesn't cover it. How many of u would go ahead with it? We'll renew her contract in a few months time but she'll only continue working if her health is ok. Otherwise, she'll take a break back home and I gotta find a new maid

    • RE: How do you store your kids photos?

      Hi peterch,

Where did u print the photo-albums? I tried 1 Malaysian printer, price is reasonable but quality of the printed photos are not very good. I’ve also tried another local printer, quality is good but it’s pricey. And yes, it takes a lot of time and effort in doing up the layouts
