      foxy:
There will be a briefing by the principal next Saturday. Considering that my ds is a boarding student, can anybody give a clue about whether I should impose my self to attend the meeting? I mean, most of my ds need is being taken care of by the hall master (and hall tutors) and we (the parents) are thousands kilometers away from my ds. We won't be able to do much help in most cases anyway (like cca maters, problem with homework or even my ds daily life). Can anybody here give me a hint (usually) what is being speak about?

Looking forward to hearing from you.... promptly πŸ˜‰

      regards,

      foxy

      Hi foxy,

I am not too sure which year your son is in but the usual things covered are as follows:

      1) introduction of year directors and class teachers
      2) re-iteration of school rules and services provided - eg. parking policy, anti-bully policy, financial assistance procedures, counselling service.
      3) challenges your child might face in this year of study due to subject/curriculum changes
      4) important timelines for submission of Internal Assessments/ TOK presentation/ EE.. etc. (especially for Year 6)

Considering you are miles away, I dont think it is really necessary for you to attend this session.
If i am not wrong, the slides presented by the Principal will be uploaded on the school website for parent's reference.
What some of us do is to ask fellow parents to take photo of important slides and forward to us for info.

      Hope this helps.

      cheers

I am sorry I do not know how much the tablet cost as my children are not in CGS. The school might not be coordinating bulk purchase of tablets in 2018 as more parents prefer to get their own tablets.. you might like to check with the school direct on this. .

The use of tablet is compulsory πŸ™‚

      Hi.

Tie is only needed for all during weekly afternoon assembly or occasional school event. Student Councillors hv to wear tie every day.

Students are to report in school uniform everyday, change into PE attire for PE lessons, then change back to school uniform after that.

      Hope this helps

One of elder boy's bunk mate went to the Jurong East emart, said δΊΊε±±δΊΊζ΅·

How was the Mt Faber outlet?
Mt Faber outlet was just as crowded.. when we arrived, there was already a long queue of around 40 ppl. The saving grace was that it was an organised mess. πŸ˜‰ And there, I saw so many recruits coughing. Poor boys.

I buy large and thick ziploc bags from Yew Tee : Bess Point.

      πŸ˜‚

The ziplock bags must be size 7\" by 10\", 10\" by 11\" and 13\" by 16\"

If you go by Bess Point, please help me to check whether they carry these sizes, totally transparent, even the zip must be non colored.

      Many thanks.

      hi Jennifer,

Really appreciate you sharing your son's NS experience. My son's in the same batch too but I get much lesser details from him than you from your son! LOL!

On Ziploc bags, we actually bought from HIS Military Products (Tel: 97797024) which is located right at the Pasir Ris bus terminal near the BMTC shuttle assembly points. Opening hours are kind of odd though... but they are usually opened when the boys are booking in or out, and on weekends (till 7pm). It comes in dimensions 10\"X7\", 10.5\"X11\" and 13\"X16\", colourless zip. We bought a pre-packed set with 5 ziplock bags of each dimension in the pack. I've forgotten how much we paid for it though.

Made a trip to the Emart at Mount Faber SAFRA and saw Ziploc bags there too. But I didn't check on the prices. PT shorts (high cuts) were out of stock for most of the sizes and we had to hunt for them at Beach Road. And wow! The price difference is eye-popping! A pair of PT shorts sold at the Emart at $6.49 is $9 or $10 over at Beach Road vendors.

Wishing your son speedy recovery so that the trainings that follow wont be too taxing on him. πŸ™‚

      Marple:

Any idea if there is a difference in the number of vacancies for ACSI IB intake for O level students, since MGS girls will also be joining? Will the number of seats for O level be decreased, hence altering the COP? Same applies to VJC?
Hi, the first batch of MGS IP girls will only join fr next yr onwards

The secondary school break pattern has wreaked havoc to my family meal times for the past 6 years. My boys will come home after school hungry and not had any lunch. (yes, even at 6+pm) They'd have taken a full meal during recess. Some boys will pack some snack or sandwich from the canteen on a standby, just in case.

Why can't the school give the boys a proper lunch break?

We've been quietly \"suffering\"... lol. My boys either have gotten used to this or resigned to fate. They didn't seem to be too bothered with it so... I just adjust accordingly.

I notice that the school hours are rather long. Esp on Wed when it ends at 3 there is only one break on that day. On top of that most ccas on that day start at 3 making it impossible for them to hv a meal to last them till 5 or 6. Any comments from parents?

      Hi gg,

Totally can identify with your concern. You may wish to note that week B Wednesday ends 20 minutes later because school starts at 9am on this day. So effectively speaking, curriculum hours is much shorter on this day. This is called a happy day by most boys as they can sleep in and go to school late. This was implemented like a year ago, where the time slot in the morning is taken up by PLT (fortnightly teachers' meeting). Since implementation, the CCA/ AEP, MEP & MSP/RSP teachers have been quite accommodating to starting at a slightly later time. Eg. MSP starts at 3:30pm instead. You may like to confirm with the relevant CCA teachers once it's allocated.

      MyPoppy:

Also we are still trying to find out what the writeup is about...
Any parents whose DS's are in the programme are able to tell us about managing the MSP?

      Thank you.
      Hi MyPoppy,

The way to apply for RSP in the past years went like this:
      1) Parents go for talk.
      2) Applicant obtain the RSP Application form from the school website a few days after the talk.
      3) Applicant will be notified of the interview time slot (> 10 minutes per person).
      4) Applicant notified of the results.
      5) RSP/ MSP lessons begin.

As for the short essay question on the RSP Application form, I'm not too sure if it varies by the year but 3 yrs' back it was this:

\"As part of the Understanding Southeast Asia Module in the RSP, you will be required to do a research project pertaining to any aspect of culture of Southeast Asia. Using maximum of 300 words, explain what your research idea is, why you choose this idea and how you intend to carry it out.\"

MSP: Students are required to sit for the GCE \"O-level\" MSP paper at year 4. There are 3 components in MSP - Oral, Composition and Note taking, and Cloze passages & Comprehension. Malay text book and workbook by the MOE are used and the boys will be asked to maintain a book of vocabulary. They also need to buy a Malay dictionary. Lessons are carried out in school after curriculum time. Once a week, 3 hours per lesson.
Homework is given almost every week, usually quite manageable. Tests will be conducted every term. Except for term 1, marks for all the rest of the tests are included in the calculation of overall marks with the other subjects.

Some MSP students are also given the opportunity to represent the school in Malay competitions organised by the MOELC every year like the Malay Boggle, Creative Writing competition etc.
