If so, it is good news for my dd because hopefully she can also receive the Education Merit Award as she also manage to get the Edusave Merit Bursary award (the cert. only) for her 2013 academic performance.

We had the opportunity to go through all the p5 topics (just the basics) in the dec hols. I did that as I am a ftwm and I knew I won't have much time nor energy for her on normal days when school starts. Therefore kiasu bit, go through all the topics roughly first.

But yeah although having done that, I agree that her comprehension of each topic is still very raw as it's not easy to grasp ratio or percentage concepts so easily.

Tested her was just to get a quick (may not be the most accurate) gauge. She coped with paper 1 without much problems (1 or 2 careless mistakes). So that tells me she understands the basics. Came paper 2, those 2 marks questions also mostly ok. Those 4 or 5 marks ones, she either cannot do the entire sum or can only do half of it, eg part a can solve, part b wrong. Something like that lor ...

Also thought that if I wait till last minutes, it might be hard to find a suitable tutor/tuition centre. Waiting list, classes full and all.

Ya ... Thus I went ahead with maths enrichment for her lor.

I have been pondering over this lately....

P5 DS has no tuition on Maths and is coached by me. DS has been doing well, scoring over 90s for his CAs & SAs.

I have a full time job and have no time researching the best method to tackle increasingly challenging maths questions. I am just wondering am I short-changing him by not sending him to enrichment to \"stretch\" his maths skills. (I find out lately he has been solving sums quicker and differently as they progressively gets difficult). I am not expecting that he participates and scores in competition, just wish he can get an A* for PSLE.

Just wondering what other parents will do......

Hi, am in the same shoes as you. my dd's maths scores also hovered around high 80s to 90s last year (P4). She had tuition last year, but her tutor cannot teach her anymore this year. I thought, maybe just let her go without enrichment for like 1st quarter/half of the year and see how. But my thoughts are changing direction fast. This year, she's P5. I looked at the Paper 2 OE questions and my jaw just dropped. I lost confidence in her (even before she lost confidence in herself!). I asked myself if my dear dd is really up to it to solve all these challenging questions. Sure enough, when I did a quick trial on her, she struggled. Mainly on those questions that cost 4 or 5 marks each. Then I reflected a bit ... as in wow .. she did quite nicely in P4, but seem to struggle a lot more right now. As I am the more ''kiasu'' type, I decided not to wait till the last minute and 'fire-fight'. So I caved in and decided to go for enrichment for Maths for dd. Just sharing my own thoughts and experience here.

Hi, need some help with the following questions :

1) Find the sum from 28 to 269.
2) Find the sum of all the even numbers from 1 to 100.
3) Find the sum of all the odd numbers from 1 to 210.
I think there should be some formula to this? I've googled, but cannot seem to find anything suitable for my dd to be able to understand. Thanks for help in advance! :))

I am not sure too.

I derived the answer as follows:

40 children = 28 adults
10 children already in the bus. 10 children = 7 adults
28 - 7 = 21 adults.[/quote]

Thanks so much for your help HAPPYH. Yup, I agree that this seems like the correct direction to approach this question. Though I’m still left with how to explain 10 children = 7 adults to my DD. She isn’t fantastic in maths. Think it’ll be quite a task to explain it to her. Not sure, but I think such questions are categorized as Heuristics type of questions?

Parents, please don't wait too long as the PSLE Oral is on 15 & 16 Aug. Not much time to work with your dear children to improve the way they speak. The oral examination is the easiest 30 marks you can get for English. It's best to make sure that you children have the best advantage to getting a good score. Over and above that, speaking well is a life skill.
