This is my first and last post on this thread. I am proud to reveal that I was one of those who successfully voted WP into my GRC.
Josephine Teo walking away quickly not answering an uncle’s question: Sylvia Lim manages my estate, when I mentioned about some issues during one of her visits she courteously replied and signalled one of her team members to help me and then walked off to the next house. Was I offended? Nah, because I was aware that she had to visit many homes and her team-mate would note down my issues. If a video was taken and circulated around without the segment of the member assisting me, would it attract similar criticisms and derisions? No, there would probably be silence or plenty of empathetic comments for WP. Sheer hypocrisy.
Doubtlessly, I was disappointed by Jo’s team handling of the FW Covid cases but I asked myself could others have handled them better? Maybe, perhaps, who knows, only God knows. Many of us are simply backseat drivers.
Some of my jobless relatives would lament that they could not find the jobs that they want by choice because the package is unattractive, they do not like long hours, do not like to work in Jurong/Woodlands, do not like to work on Saturdays, do not want to work overtime, do not want shift work and the blah…
My bil’s company tried to hire locals aged between mid 20s to early 30s hoping to train them into skilled craftsmen with future stints in China but to his disappointment in spite of a 5-day work week, 14 days leave, bonus sharing there were no local takers, not even ex-inmates (who did not turn up on the first day of work), eventually they were taken up by Malaysians.
My hubby who works in a well-known MNC in Jurong advertised 2-3 times for sales as well as planning executives with at least diploma level paying aro’ 3K but he was disappointed that when he sorted out the piles of applications, only a few were local applicants and the rest were from ASEAN and India (some are highly educated). His company’s IT dept is a mini India, according to the local HR guy, they couldn’t find suitable Singaporeans because those who applied for their IT jobs have salary expectations and career advancement plans that the company couldn’t meet. The company is not a top paymaster.
I chatted with my regular online marketplace delivery chap who told me that he enjoys moving around, not having to meet the boss daily, taking up other part-time jobs and any time he wants to go to JB for PMD races he just needs to arrange with a substitute to do deliveries, some of his buddies work the same jobs like him.
My colleague’s hubby in his mid 50s decided to resign from his stressful management job to become a Grab driver and according to him there are some who opt for such jobs as their kids do not need their financial support anymore.
I am mindful that many who are jobless, who become Grab drivers or Deliveroo, Food Panda deliverymen etc do not have the same mindset/aspirations of the abovementioned, perhaps an independent body should be set-up to explore thoroughly the various causes on why many Singaporeans/PMETs can’t find jobs; ranging from job matches vs expectations vs qualifications, Singapore Talents vs FTs.
I have some China expatriate colleagues and through them know others from China and I must say that their kids are very eloquent, confident, driven and motivated to learn. IMHO, their local peers here pale next to them. The Chinese and also the Vietnamese workforce are progressing rapidly in terms of their qualifications and abilities and adaptability, sooner or later they will surpass us.
Hmm, I think the world’s most adored and respected top investor Warren Buffet will not guarantee that every investment will have ROI and not have any losses.
The party voted in to form the government faces imminent challenges ranging from the worsening relations between Unpredictable States and China, navigating relations with the 2 giants and yet not aligning to them needs an experienced team; the complex disputes in South China Sea – disunity among the ASEAN members; picking up the pieces post Covid, the impact from the forthcoming China’s mega belt road project ECRL in Malaysia … try 5 years for a coalition government or a political deadlock, please God, spare me that anguish.
I am kiasi but I am more concerned and fearful of the looming tough competition that my kids and other kids of their generation will face. I am an odd ball, instead of encouraging my kids to aim for degrees, I suggested to them to learn/hone a skill or a craft that can readily earn them a decent income here crisis or not, sans the ambition of owning a car and owning a condominium. I will always advise them not to treat our government formed by any elected party as their nanny; they must learn from their China Chinese friends, adaptability, be agile to learn new skills and resilient to ride through life’s turbulences.
