My experience with my kid 2 years ago was that you dig in your heels and persevere with math h2 which offered greater U application options, unless u were gunning to read humanities like lit. The thinking was that if u had to drop anything to H1, it should be Econs. Her math was deplorable all the way through from J1 to J2, but with some help and a doubling of focus aided by a complete shutdown on CCA July onwards, the bet paid off.

RE: School Placement Exercise for returning S'porean children
Hi there, I just wanted to share my experience of reintroducing my DD back into Spore education 3 years ago. We were away 13 years. DD could have stayed back abroad to finish high school but we decided that she return for the family to stay together. She sat the SPERS for JC1 entry, and together with her decent but not stellar IGSCE grades, applied for a posting to middle tier JCs. She sat for some add. maths papers at JC placement tests, got a place and then struggled academically through the next 2 years. Her "splashdown from outerspace" was lonely and bewildering as teenagers need constant affirmation from familiar surrounding. Fortunately at JC1, students get recirculated to different JCs and were themselves new to the school, so she wasnt alone in her predicament and and the orientation week programme helped her settle in. Academically, initial results were really really dismal, and she (we too) wondered if we made the right decision. We lumbered along in the wilderness. Then, surprise surprise, in mid JC2, there was sudden improvement. She eventually got grades good enough for NUS Biz. I really thank God things worked out eventually.
