hawhamom:
Hi everyone! I'm just trying my luck here, seeing that this thread has been inactive for a few months...

Just submitted our PV application form yesterday and am feeling a little worried. We are both working parents, granted that my husband's work hours are flexible and I, being an international school teacher, have long school holidays that fall during local school terms. I wonder if we will be able to manage at least 40 hours in the limited time that we are available. That is, if we get balloted for PV in the first place.

For parents here with PV experience or are very familiar with the school, can you share the kind of volunteer jobs Mee Toh normally seek for, and their usual timings? Do you think, if I have an area of expertise (I'm an ex-MOE Chinese teacher with international IB PYP experience) that I can offer my services in, and a specific block of time (almost always the week/s before or after local students' school holidays) that I am completely free to go volunteer, that I can call the school up to let them know? I know some schools would love that (for supporting non-Chinese speakers and foreign kids), but I've also heard that some schools prefer parents not to be involved with any teaching (and just do manual/support volunteering work), so I am a little hesitant. Previous experience with local schools' admin offices are they are not very warm or receptive to pro-activeness on the parents' parts, not to mention people like us who are not even parents of the school yet...

Please offer some advise, or just say hi if you are also a PV-to-be with born-in-2012 kids!

      Hi hawhamom,

I was a Mee Toh PV and hope my sharing will help you in a way or another.
Usually they will station parents at Gates for morning when school starts and when school dismissal. So, for morning, it will be about 6:30am and for afternoon, I think it should be about 1pm or something... (I was in the morning shift. )

Once in a while, there will be jobs like swimming classes, librarian tasks for parents to clock their hours faster.

The PV job doesn't stop once you hit 40 hours for my case. They said to complete 2 terms. So, mine was from Jan-Jun.

      Hi,

Anyone knows what is the school bookshop number? Has been trying to call +65 6260 7122 for days and just keeps getting redirected to a fax machine. :scratchhead:
any idea where to get black shoes for boys?

I heard from another parent that you can buy it from Bata.

Do the school have a standard type of design or as long as its black. If I don't remember wrongly the school sock is embossed with school logo?

Hi Simplycho, your kid going to P1 next year is a boy too?
According to what the mother told me, any black shoes will do.
MamaO, what about you? Do you have a girl or boy going to P1 next year?
Hi Civi,

But 2 terms will be enough? Yes, one time stress. :rahrah:

Yup, 2 terms more than enough to clock 40 hours. And sometimes there will be extra ad-hoc duties which we can sign up for too.

how they choose their PV with so many applicants. Do you need to be interview or submit project as now a lot of school is doing this.

you must be very familiar with the school since you have spend at least 40hrs in school. care to share any information with us. Is your kid a girl or boy who is going in next year?
Now they go by balloting for selection of PVs. Hmm, from what I observed, Monday they usually report at Hall for assembly, Tuesday to Friday report at parade square. What else would u like to know? Haha.
I have a son going to P1 next year.

That's interested, I thought split task as maybe academic and others.

Did you join in as PV then?
Is both your kids boys or girls or 1 each.
Is yours both girls or boys? Since now elder is in, younger can go in under phase 1 if age is not too far apart.
Yup. I joined as PV and did 2 terms work.
And yup, younger one within 6 years, so don't need to go through the same stress again. 🙂
Hi Mummies

      Pretty quiet on here.

I hope to know more mummies here whose child will be in P1 next year. My dd will be in P1 next year, we could share and learn together. 😄

      Hi,

Not a mum but a dad here. My son will be going Mee Toh next year too. If you all don't mind, hope I can join in the discussion too.

      Hi Daddy

U r a very onz daddy, of course you r most welcome to join.
Thanks. Haha. My wife and I split the tasks. I handle the elder kid and she handle the younger one. So, everything from finding out when to do PV, enroll to do PV, doing PV and monitoring the stats in Kiasuparents I handled.
But glad that my past 2 years effort not gone wasted. And I admit I am a Kiasu Daddy. 😂
