Happy New Year all. :rahrah:

Some qns to ask in the new year. Do the boys need a laptop for their studies? Under the booklist math is taught by e-learning. May I know how is it taught?

Thanks šŸ˜„
Hi, laptop is not absolutely necessary but it'd be useful for project work. For Maths, worksheets will be provided. šŸ˜„
My DS score 247 +2 got into CHS express

His first choice is ACSI, should i appeal or just go to CHS? I know he is quite upset with this result but he don't want to upset me so he said no need to appeal, he will do well in this school and go to IP at sec 3. I should feel happy with what he said to me but i feel so sorry for him.

A lot of my friends said CHS is a good school as well, asked me just stick to it.

So now i don't know whether want to appeal for him or not.

Please advise. Thank you very much

You should appeal if you think you have reasons to do so. Not because you find it troublesome or let nature takes its course! After the deadline, your choices are gone almost forever and you should teach your son to make better choices in life than not not exercising your choices at all.
You may consider these factors :
Tangible
1) Fees
2) Distance
Intangible
1) Culture - whether your son is suitable for a very traditional chinese school (as comparing to other school like SJI (shifting to Bishan), Victoria, Bt Panjang High etc) If he does not like chinese, no point going CHS.
2) CCA in the 2 schools.

With these issues, i hope you can decide better. Lastly, if the fees is ACSI is too steep and CHS is too far/not convenient, then try another school.

Hope the above helps.

Oops! Correction, i should say CHS, as compared to ASCI ,is a school with strong focus in Chinese. And if he does not like Chinese or not strong in MT/Chinese, then do not go. I personally have exp that if a boy is not strong in Chinese, he will not be place in the \"better\" classes and will not outshine those stronger in Chinese or those from PRC...
Hi Kokomommy, it is not true that the boys in CHS are placed in better classes only if they are strong in Chinese. For my ds's cohort 2 yrs ago, the boys were placed in classes according to their psle t-scores. There was indeed a class for those who are strong in Chinese, and there were many Chinese nationals in that class. But that is not the best class for that year.

The maths teacher is HOD the-one-who-cannot-be-named, and the-one-who-plays-candy-crush, who is a lady. Generally I feel male teachers are more forgiving towards boys.

Sorry if my response is untimely, i think i knw the Maths teacher u are referring to. She is actually a really good & dedicated teacher, not to mention effective. She has just retired, which is really a shame. My ds & many of his classmates hv alot of respect for her.

Looking at the trend of pic zuo wen from PSLE 2011...seems to be getting harder...or maybe I am not good at Chinese so to me, it's hard.

I do not think sch teachers explain the compo requirement based on MOE syllabus to pupils.

Most remarks I see on my children's comp are:

thoughts r insufficiently explained
flow is not eloquent
more feelings should be injected into the character
incorrect usage of vocabulary
incorrect language structure

to me, these remarks are directed at the technical aspects of the compo, what about the theme?

Ytd, I was reviewing his past sch compo (only 5 pieces for the whole year). Ah boy told me teacher never says must be like what you say leh.

I taught ah boy:

1. be polite in dialogue: show the marker you r a well mannered person
2. put in another character in your story. You are not the sole hero. With another character, there will be more dimensions to each character, more feelings can be expressed, not so boring.
3. try to write a humorous storyline

I hope these 3 tips help.

If his CL score is still B, then we know the above are not helpful :rotflmao:

Wow, you have made me look at compo writing from a brand new perspective :goodpost:
My girl seems to be taking it easy, although she is not doing very well in her school work. She sleeps as usual, watch korean drama, and chat with her friend in whatsapp. We feel like taking away her hp. She just switch off at 830pm almost daily when psle is coming soon.

We took away DS phone abt a month back. The whatapps group messages are hundreds a day so he kept checking his phone. And once he started, he could not stop. We gave many chances and he could not control the usage so we took it away. Since then, there's so much peace at home and he is focusing on his work so much better.

How does your ds react to it? Was he mad at you? Guess we need to act on it tonight.
I confiscated dd's phone sometime last yr becos she was involved in a few whatsapp chat groups and the no. of messages were insane, like 1000 in a few hrs  ! Almost all of those messages were nonsensical, some bordering on crude. Dd was very upset & angry, but i did not relent. I explained to her my rationale & she had grudgingly accepted it. I did let her use the phone on a few occasions like during the sch hols. She had recently requested that i return the phone to her after the psle!
