      What's a good prelim exam result? 3As? 2As, 2Bs?

To me, a good result is when the child has performed to his ability or slightly over in relation to his cohort. If the child is usually in the top 5%, and he is there again, that's good; if the child is usually at the 50th percentile, and he is there again or even a little higher, that's good. \"Good\" should be relative, not absolute. Of course, I know that info is not (yet?) available, but hopefully the child will have a sense of where he is.

Thanks! My DD says that they were told the relativity does not count. Unis just look at the actual grades; and this year, everyone did quite well at prelims. So just wondering what \"quite well\" means, since usually prelims are very hard.

I hope the students are not taking the \"Madness\" too much to heart - no point driving themselves to the point of mental instability! And I hope the prelim grades have been reasonable; I think it's counter-productive to mark excessively strictly and demoralise those who are not so strong academically and emotionally. If anything, this is the time for teachers (and parents) to ease off the pressure and ensure that the kids sleep enough, have some leisure time, and generally stay sane and healthy for the last lap. They should have studied enough by now - now should be the \"keep warm\" phase with some spot patching.

I'm sure the teachers know what they should be doing at different point in time. DS says the previous two exams (this year) had higher 'casualty' rates. We're very pleased with DS' results. 😄

Nah, don't think this 'madness' is gonna be detrimental to anyone's mental health. It has been around for years. Most students are joining this 'madness' for camaraderie (peer support & bonding). Its their final year @ RI after all.

PS : The truly studious ones are those mugging at home. :siam:

I'm glad to hear that the casualty rate is lower this time. My daughter was a bit concerned that some of the high scores seemed rather low this time, but she doesn't know the spread. And she doesn't like to ask others.

Yes, they will be making the most of their last few weeks in school. It's hard to imagine that I don't need to think about school terms and holidays from now on (or rather, the academic year will be completely different). I was making an appointment for early March next year, and reflexively tried to figure out when the school holidays were, then remembered that it didn't matter any more![/quote]What's a good prelim exam result? 3As? 2As, 2Bs?

to clarify, 1k to 1t have both geppers and mainstream. But really, it doesn’t matter after a while, the boys mature, and they find their own path.

The GEP classes are from 1K to 1T. R and T all have GEP boys. 1M has scores from 25x to 27x. Some of the classes in 1K to 1T (e.g. 1T have only 24 students). Anyway, after a few months - it doesn’t matter - its a question of how they perform. I had a friend whose DS went in via sports, and had a very high GPA 3.9 at the end of the first year.

Don’t think they specifically put 27x in any particular class. All the GEP classes have a mix of PSLE grades, including 1.12/1.13.

    • RE: DSA 2011

Ngbrdad, you shouldn’t worry about that. DS is in ACS, and boys all mix very well. All good kids; not flash. The kids are no different from kids in any other gep school - focused on getting grades (very competitive), playing with friends, deciding which school to go to etc. Parents of these kids have to work too, and worry about our kids’ future - so we’re all pretty much in the same boat with everyone else.
