Wrt OP/IP “segregation”, I am not referring to timetables or class allocations. Of course those are separated because they learn different things in their respective curriculums.

I believe ACSI (correct me if I am wrong here) has separate wings in the school for IP and OP and they are not allowed to trespass into the “other” wing. Within each CCA there are 2 separate groups of boys, IP and OP, and they do not mix at all. The special programs for IP are not open to any OP students at all, not even at Sec 1-2 level. I got the impression that there exist 2 different social “classes” of people in the school: the elite IP class & the less-stellar & less prestigious OP folk that dont get access to the same resources. It’s like “us versus them” and the tour guides & CCA reps etc literally dont know anything about the other folks.

Whereas at SJI, I didnt sense any such dividing line. The entire school compound is open and free to walk thru no matter whether OP or IP, facilities & resources are shared. The OP kids get to experience mentored research projects right from Sec 1. The CCAs we asked didnt seem to require any prior experience, and there is a free-for-all try out period during Orientation before they fill in their choices. It is unlike certain CCAs at ACSI where only those with competition experience are accepted.[/quote]

Based on past few years’ experience, Year 1 at ACSI is adjustment year & honeymoon year.

IB hv their own curriculum, not mixed with students fr Express classes.

Just rmbr to set aside June sch holidays for their project team meetings. Guess next year might still be a lot less difficult to juggle time with vaccine for covid still inconclusive so travel will not be in the way nor project team may be on Microsoft meets or zoom & the like.

As to whether the boys are hooked on hp, will depend on each individual’s self discipline.

What I find useful is to sign up as many enrichment lessons as possible to engage their time constructively. My child had the option to do 3rd language & it literally cuts him off fr unproductive chats or “game discussion groups”. Overtime, things got focussed towards classroom discussion, CCAs Grpchat & teacher-students class/subj chats.

At Secondary level, we can’t restrict these young fellows to learn to manage their own time, and they’ll need that community learning space.

The school hv a policy of hp usage only after classes & they’re expected to put Ho in Their own lockers.

My boy I think he has no time to do others things as he is in competitive sport. So training at least 3 to 4x per week. But his computer skill is not that advance. So not sure this will cause him slower in catching up in the lesson?

The Integrated Programme (IP) students have classes separate from the O-Level Track (Express) students. No, they don't normally get hooked on phones in the school compound. S1 IP workload is halfway between the old GEP workload and the Express workload; it's not easy, but not extremely difficult.
