I agree TH and WLC are all having big masses .they won't have much personal attention .So if a child really requires help and more explanation at the start , a smaller group ( 3-4) would be better.

TH do have smaller classes like 3-4 students in certain location.varies yearly .

Hi, quite right. First it's great if you could find a smaller group - brainstorming can still happen among peers (important for writing cos story plots need to be coherent) & tutor has leisure to focus on individuals. TH weekday slots tend to be quite alright. Next is the nature of the tutors. We've sat in Morris Allen, JEC writing classes, barely 2 students, yet the tutor didn't bother. He/She would just be staring out in space while his/her 2 kids wrestle it out on paper. 🤷

Thanks for reminding .A good teacher matters a lot .I passed by a community center yesterday and saw a Chinese teacher enthusiastically conducting compo class to the p3 students .Each and every child listened so attentively and despite a big class of 10, non was fidgety or talking away.
I went to the receptionist to enquire more about the lessons and was told that each lesson cost $16 . Oral, compre and compo are all taught every lesson .Took a look at the notes and I was impressed! The image of the passionate teacher is firmly imprinted in my head now

Is TH p5 Zuowen effective, helpful or not really?

Hi hi, taking example of my dc2. The child isn't a writer, can't be bothered to develop a story or regurgitate vocabulary learnt - TH won't be effective after a year. This means the child falls into complacency & a new exam topic appears, child will fail content. Taking another example of dc1. Independent learner, takes writing seriously, understands & internalises tutor's techniques, vocab - TH is quite sufficient. If you are looking for exam notes which are given nicely organised - TH  (check your PM, thanks). To that effect, you can regurgitate TH model compos for school & it won't seem out of place. However if you need someone to push you, if you wanna develop your own writer's voice, another centre then; TH tutors won't have the time for personal attention. It all once again boils down to needs & expectations.

Hi, I feel that all enrichment centres are doing a great job trying to teach compo writing to young children & one can see that they are essentially the same. If the students produce different results it could well be (pure speculation) the efforts the child puts in privately.

Looking at TH & WLC. TH compo topics are fairly standard, nothing too out of the ordinary (which means you may not be writing about an encounter with a 没有公德心的遛狗老人) & a P3 topic may appear in P4 again. The language mastery is different so I suppose the child could try writing more vividly the 2nd time round, use more 成语俗语. TH classifies compo topics effectively by themes - great for exam revision. You'd get the feel that an ex-MOE teacher sits on the curriculum planning board (purely personal opinion). Occasionally there will be discussions of writing techniques as well. WLC topics are inclined towards writers who enjoy a good challenge - you could come across something like writing about 被宠坏的孩子. Students will get to write a variety of genres in upper primary - 看图 完成 情景 命题。So if the child is still unable to produce a standard compo (maybe 最快乐的一天), TH would be a good starting point.

TH lesson starts a compo topic with some question prompts, useful vocabulary... Tutor explains briefly the expectation of each paragraph, reads her own model compo aloud. She may ask the class for ideas but minimal class participation is required. For lower primary she may allow the class to copy out chunks of sentences she flashes on the board. WLC is pretty much the same, except that the tutor we have (tutor's modus operandi could well differ from person to person too, not so much a centre thingie) will make the children listen to her analysis first, then distribute the notes & run through the centre's analysis, plus read aloud her model compo. You are not encouraged to jot down notes (upper pri) as the tutor reads the model cos you have to internalise it all & churn out your own work. & you can't just hand in something, there is an expectation of length (upper pri, 4 pages).

TH tutors mark & the child just needs to do 字词 改正 along the borders; WLC tutors require draft 2.
      Thanks minecrafter,

Seems like Tien hsia is good for foundation and \" New Writers\".

We parents are often impressed with the quality of the compo notes and model essay provided by Centers but in actual fact, kids don't write so well at their level .maybe that 1% only .even if it looks like a \"wow\" piece of model essay pasted on the walls of the Centers, the Teachers have actually marked and corrected before making them draft and look like a perfect essay.

So back to being realistic , kids need to take lessons seriously, parents need to work hand in hand with Teachers and kids .

Hi, we were there till last year. If our experience is still of relevance, we could share.

Hi minecrafter , great. Could you share how their compo class works? I do revision with my kids after their lessons but have to stop the current one because my child feels that it's not effective .My child is in lower primary .

Don't mind sharing why you stopped Tien hsia last year?

      Thx

      Hi

For 江, I like to check with parents whose kids are in the FLS centre whether they do 听写默写. From previous posts, it was mentioned that they do not give 范文. In that case, whatbis their methodology in improving the 作文 standard of a kid? Are their classes still 18 to 20?
      Thanks in advance.
Hi Fizz, in my honest opinion, I feel that Wang's lessons do not give the kids opportunities to brainstorm ideas for 作文 class.Kids practically copy down 10 sentences for p1 and p2 level .their classes are 12 students max but sometimes can go up to 14 .If you do not want your child to be spoon fed too much, Wang is not a good idea then.hope you find a suitable enrichment for your child

Ps: do not be attracted to the idioms given by 汪。the kids barely absorbed unless parents re emphasise at home .
