      Hi Octomomsg,

Thanks for your interest in our courses. We have the syllabus for the new PSLE and have prepared all our levels, especially our current P5s who will be sitting for the new PSLE syllabus next year, with materials to familiarise them.

On the idea of reading storybooks in hope that these will transfer to the skill of creative writing, I agree reading is helpful. However, if the child is not reading actively (with the intention of picking up writing skills from there) then you may not always see the transference. We have a holiday course - Active Reading- which can tune in a child to this. You might want to consider it? It's basically a mini-literature lesson for primary kids. They have to read three books before coming to class and we explore character traits, plot and vocabulary for setting details during the lessons - this way, the benefits of the book are highlighted to the kids and they end up reading actively!

For Creative Writing, like you asked about, we have Story Writer - an intensive course for holiday programme where the kids write one story each day in the week of 6 lessons and at the end of the course, they've a booklet of short stories they've written. For P5 and P6 we focus on a different skill each day of the course - eg: setting details, characterization, plot twists....put together, this set of skills enables any writer to make a simple storyline chocablock with vivid vocabulary and details.

We do have a term time course which teaches creative writing, comprehension and grammar skills as well, and this runs through the academic year. Do we have space in our classes? Yes- it depends on which time slot you're looking at.
I'm pasting our webpage here http://www.creativehorizons.com.sg/
Please feel free to look for the timetable and give us a buzz on the time slot you're interested in. Our number can be found on the website as well.

      Cheers!

      Hi Everyone!

Here’s a shout out announcing that we’ve closed our school at Eastgate and moved classes to our premises at Tanglin Shopping Centre. It’s been a good run in the East and we want to thank you for your support. Here’s looking forward to seeing you in Orchard.

      Hello everyone!

Here's updating everyone that we are closing the branch at Eastgate and merging our classes with Tanglin centre's.

It's been great at Katong but due to a need to pool resources of our precious teachers and enable a bigger number of options for parents to choose from, we think it works better in the long run this way.

Thank you all for the great support so far. We are really glad to see many of you have opted to move with us! Really appreciate the vote of confidence! :rahrah:

      HI!

At K1 the little ones are given an opportunity to read especially with slight vocabulary. We work more with the meaning of what they are reading. Those who join our K1 classes have already learnt to read in kindergarten so our approach focuses more on meanings- semantic meaning and lexicon meaning.

K2 Classes are chock-a-block with fun activities - we do everything: reading aloud, pronunciation, comprehension and sentence construction.

The students do some writing, with a short composition as an end-goal. To make the activities engaging, there’s colouring and art included for a more tactile experience for the kids.

The class size is limited to 6 students per teacher so the students can have more personalised attention.

Thanks for asking! Would you have any other query?

      XXXX:
      ngl2010:

Hi. Anybody can help in these Synthesis and Transformation problems?

      1. Jared had injured his elbow during practice. Jared won the tennis match.
Answer 1: Jared won the tennis match despite injuring his elbow during practice.
Answer 2: Jared won the tennis match despite the fact that he had injured his elbow during practice.
      Which answer is correct?

      2. The Prefect Master said, \"This year the NE Show will be at the Padang.\"
Answer 1: The Prefect Master announced that the NE Show would be at the Padang that year.
Answer 2: The Prefect Master announced that that year the NE Show would be at the Padang.
      Which answer is correct?

      TIA

Good grief! What are the rules you are meant to be applying here? Both answers to both questions are not incorrect but I prefer answer 1 in both cases, but cannot explain why (except they sound more fluent to my ear).

Please provide the rule set and let's see if we can apply it.

One of the fundamental transformation/synthesis rules is to maintain the verb forms. As far as possible, the order of words should also be maintained.

      Question 1:
The original first sentence in question 1 contains the verb form \"had injured\", with \"had\" as a helping verb. Thus it is advisable to retain the helping verb in the synthesised sentence (\"having injured\").

Jared won the tennis match despite having injured his elbow during practice.

Answer 2 to question 1 is also correct.

      Question 2:
Usually words are given to help the students do the transformation/synthesis. If the verb \"announced\" is not given as part of the beginning words, then there is no reason why \"said\" should not be retained. Assuming that the verb \"announced\" is given as the guiding verb, and following the above rule about word order, then answer 2 is the more acceptable answer.
