I’m supportive of UGs too - toughens the boys up. I’ve heard of instances where seniors (not in RI, but in other schools) taking their trainings or punishments too far though. Does anyone have comments on the senior-junior dynamics at RI, and teachers’ involvement in the CCA sessions?

Sorry if this has been brought up in the 612 pages of this forum. My DS is heading to RI and is confused by the number of attires. :?:


The school uniform is pretty standard and self-explanatory. Are there RI socks that they have to purchase?

Then there are other attires we’ve seen - Team Raffles black polo, multi-coloured t-shirts (house tees?), the green jersey-looking t-shirt, and the traditional PE attire. What are each for, and are there any others we need to buy?

Does he wear the PE attire on the first day?

Hi everyone. There were a few questions on whether your DS will be able to handle sports/physical activities in VS. I have 2 DS in VS and can share my experience.


Being a boys' school, sports/physical activities are incorporated into both the curriculum and CCAs. The PE curriculum is well-developed. The school trains the boys well for NAPFA, and I feel this is good preparation for NS. Of course, there are some who don't pass, but there is no boot camp required if the boys don't pass.

Almost all CCAs incorporate sports, whether it's a sports CCA or not. This applies even to Clubs and Societies, who have morning PT during their camps. On regular CCA days, push ups are often used as a form of discipline. However, all these are very light workouts that help the boys develop physically and mentally.

My 2 DS started off disliking most sports, but now they come home in their PE attire almost everyday after a game or training in school, and they enjoy it. As long as they remain focused on their studies, I think this is a good change I've seen. :xedfingers:

The 3 goals of an education at VS is to be a gentleman, professional and sportsman. Nevertheless, as a comment above mentioned, VS is not a sports school and the boys come in all 'shapes and sizes'. Everyone is a Victorian, nonetheless.

I suggest waiting for your DS to be assigned to his sports house first as each house has it's own colour. It is worn on annual sports days. I think there was one whole term when DS had to wear the tank top for PE. Not sure if it depends on the preference of the teacher.


Behaviour is top-notch. The school has in place good control measures as rainbowie has pointed out. Being a boys' school and a school with a strong uniformed group (UG) culture, you can expect some UG influences.

Does anyone know if it is necessary to buy the VS tank top? There are a few colours available. DS is not quite used to the tank top.

I've heard many good things about VS boys' behaviour but was wondering if things are regimented there. I wouldn't mind it, but will need to prepare DS for it.

Get your sons into VS then. You can buy as many PE attire as you want, like I have. Otherwise, please look elsewhere.

And you have an interest in the wordings because?

I don’t see how someone who’s not from VS would want to wear VS PE attire. As the back design suggests, it is meant for Victorians.
